In May 1948, Shafei was admitted to Shijiazhuang Bethune Peace Hospital for treatment because his tuberculosis condition worsened. There were many Japanese medical staff in that hospital. During his hospitalization, Shafei's mental illness relapsed. He always told his family: "The Japanese doctors killed Lu Xun and they came to kill me again."

In Shafei's mind, Lu Xun was killed by Japanese doctors. Shafei, who was only 38 years old, passed away like this. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Shafei's family appealed many times, hoping to have the case re-examined. However, it was not until the end of the ten-year special period that Shafei's case was given the opportunity to be re-examined. After a period of investigation, in 1986, the Beijing Military Region Court revoked the verdict against Shafei that year and believed that he was in a mental illness when he fired the gun and could not be held responsible. Therefore, all of Shafei's reputation was restored.
