Famous educator, chemist, pesticide scientist, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering , Nankai University professor Li Zhengming academician, died of illness in Tianjin on October 4, 2021, at the age of 90.
Li Zhengming was born in Shanghai in January 1931 and his ancestral home is Suzhou. Li Zhengming was born in the family of scholars. Grandfather Li Weige was a translator and educator at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. He is known as the founder of China's modern steel industry. His father, Li Zhongdao, graduated from Soochow University, studied in the United States and obtained a Master of from the University of Michigan and a Ph.
In 1948, Li Zhengming studied in the US after graduating from Soochow University Affiliated High School. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in 1953, he returned to China to devote himself to the construction of New China. He was assigned to Nankai University to continue his postgraduate studies with Yang Shi, the founder of China's pesticide chemistry and elemental organic chemistry, and stay as a teacher after graduation. In 1962, he started teaching and scientific research in the fields of organic chemistry and pesticide chemistry at the Institute of Elemental Organic Chemistry of Nankai University, founded by Yang Shixian . In 1964, the insecticides Phosphorus 32 and Phosphorus 47, which he participated in the development, won the second prize of the New Product of the National Science and Technology Commission. In 1965, pesticide chemistry was identified as one of the main directions of the Institute of Elemental Organic Chemistry of Nankai University. He tracked the progress of new foreign pesticides in time and led the research team to successfully develop a new fungicide "Yekujing", which filled the gap in domestic technology. In 1978, he won the National Science Conference Award.

Since the early 1990s, Li Zhengming has advocated the creation of green pesticides and led the research team on sulfonylurea herbicides Carry out systematic research, through the corresponding basic theoretical research,He revised and developed the four internationally recognized rules of sulfonylurea structure-activity relationship, so that my country's herbicide research no longer simply imitates foreign countries, and enters the creative stage under the guidance of theory.
Monosulfuron-methyl, developed by Li Zhengming's research group, is a new type of biological control agent that is super-efficient, non-toxic, non-polluted, and environmentally friendly. In 2007, monosulfuron-methyl became the first new herbicide variety with independent intellectual property rights to obtain a national new pesticide registration certificate since the founding of New China, filling a long-term technological gap in my country.
In 1995, Li Zhengming was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (Department of Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering). Li Zhengming has devoted his life to education, guided and trained more than 180 graduate students, and made outstanding contributions to the construction of key disciplines and talent training of organic chemistry and pesticide science in my country. He successively won the National Science Conference Award (1978), the Second Prize of National Natural Science (1987), the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress (1993), the Second Prize of National Technology Invention (2007), and the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress of the Ministry of Chemical Industry (1991). More than 70 awards and honorary titles, including the Second Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ministry of Education (1993, 1998).
