"When I first came to the school, the teaching building was a bungalow with civil structure and was identified as a first-level dangerous building." Dai Duanquan said that looking at the crumbling teaching building, he secretly made up his mind to rebuild the school. Let the children nearby feel safe to come here to study. But when he found Murakami, he found that he couldn't spare any extra money to rebuild the teaching building.
When he went back at night, Dai Duanquan stayed up all night, thinking about how to raise funds. The next day, he began to do ideological work in the four surrounding villages and put forward suggestions for division of labor and cooperation and fundraising based on the actual situation. He also took the initiative to take the lead in donating money. In less than half a year, he and the school building leadership group raised 70,000 yuan. Diversified, a 295-square-meter red brick bungalow was built to provide a stable environment for children to go to school.
The school's teaching environment has been improved, but the teaching facilities are far from enough. The school has no playground, no activity room, no library, no kitchen, and not even walls. Dai Duanquan is secretly worried.

For students, Dai Duanquan always teaches patiently and sincerely cares for them. As the principal of Xiangping Primary School, in order to ensure the safety of students, Dai Duanquan must regularly check the school's doors, windows, water and electricity safety, and conduct safety education to enhance students' safety awareness. Since the school used to build a tiled house, he would often tap the edge of the tiles with a bamboo pole. If there were any cracks, he would replace them promptly to prevent the tiles from falling and hitting students. When encountering windy and rainy weather, he insisted on sending the students home one by one.
In life, Dai Duanquan is a caring "parent". Since Xiangping Primary School is surrounded by mountains, some students need boarding. So, he got up early every day and prepared three meals a day for the children. After all the children go to bed at night, he has time to correct homework and prepare lesson plans for the next day. In the summer, they repelled mosquitoes and disinfected, and in the winter, they lit fires to keep warm and covered themselves with quilts to keep out the cold; in order to prevent , influenza, and other diseases, they boiled medicine for students to drink... Dai Duanquan's love for the students is condensed in every moment of his life.

From 1980 to the present, he has been staying deep in the mountains and has never left for 42 years. With his unremitting efforts, the teaching environment of Xiangping Primary School gradually improved, and more and more students came out of the mountains.

In fact, when he first became a teacher, Dai Duanquan also "backed out" because of the poor teaching environment.
The time goes back to 1980. After repeated efforts by local village cadres, Dai Duanquan, who had just graduated from high school, came to Heli Primary School in Chungkou Town to become a teacher. That year, he was only 18 years old.
When he first came to Heli Primary School full of hope, what he saw was a playground full of weeds and cow dung, walls covered with spider webs, rats scurrying around, and simple desks covered with dust. It made him a little panicked.
Remembering the earnest expectations of the cadres of the branch and village committees, Dai Duanquan quickly picked up his mood and cleaned the classrooms and rooms. There were no roads in the village at that time, so in order not to delay students' studies, he could only carry the books back on foot with a pole. The road of more than 60 miles was extremely rugged, and it was getting dark before I knew it. Listening to the rustling wind in my ears and the occasional cry of wild beasts, Dai Duanquan was a little panicked when he suddenly noticed a little light appearing in front of him. .
It turned out that the villagers knew that he had not returned from picking up the books and were worried that something had happened to him, so they searched for him all the way with torches.
That night, the scene of the villagers holding torches looking for him was deeply etched in Dai Duanquan's mind. Under the dim oil lamp, he wrote eight words: "Love is in the mountains, and my determination is unswerving." Since then, he has strengthened his determination to stay in the mountains.
The school conditions were very poor at that time. There was no food for him to eat, so he often just had a bowl of rice soup or chili soup. Because there are students of different grades, Dai Duanquan uses a compound teaching method, using wooden boards to separate students of different grades. During a class, the wooden boards run back and forth on both sides.During the day, I attend classes and talk to students. At night, I correct homework and prepare lessons. Sometimes I walk more than ten miles of mountain roads to visit homes. With his enthusiasm and sincerity for students, he managed Heli Primary School in a great way and attracted many students from other villages to study.
In 1990, when he learned that his superiors were worried about Xianggu Primary School, which had worse conditions and a more remote location, Dai Duanquan took the initiative to ask for a transfer to "open up wasteland" there for a second time. In order to change the appearance of the school, he issued a military order that "if the school is not improved, half a year's salary will be voluntarily withheld." He led the villagers to carry cement, transport sand and gravel, and build flower beds. The campus soon became full of vitality.
At that time, there were two grades of students in Xianggu Primary School with poor foundation. Many students did not even master Chinese Pinyin and multiplication formulas . Dai Duanquan thought of a way to write down the pinyin and multiplication formulas for each school. On the walls and doors of the house, students can read more and practice more. In the evening, he also visits families in groups and takes turns tutoring. After half a year of hard work, the scores of several classes have improved rapidly.
Because the school did not have a clean drinking water source, the students had to go to a small ditch a few hundred meters away from the school to get water. Dai Duanquan was worried that it would affect the students' health, so he invited experienced farmers nearby to collect water on the hillside. He found a high-quality water source and called his wife to spend more than a month digging a six-meter-deep well. The then village party branch secretary held Dai Duanquan's hand tightly and said, "Teacher Dai, don't forget the man who dug the well when you drink water. We want to erect a monument for you!"
In 1993, Dai Duanquan was transferred to Xiangxiang University due to work needs. When he was the principal of Ping Primary School, the students of Xianggu Primary School and the surrounding villagers shed tears, beat gongs, drums and set off firecrackers to send him to Xiangping Primary School. He also started the third "opening up wasteland" in his life.
"For more than 40 years, I have taught in three schools: Heli, Xianggu, and Xiangping. Everywhere I went was a pioneering education in mountainous areas. But as long as I see students grow into talents who are useful to society, I feel that all my loneliness and monotony are worth it," Dai Duanquan said, "Now that I am retired, as long as I can help, I will never look back."
