In January 1999, a sensational event occurred at Tonghui Chanlin Temple in Jiuhua Mountain, Anhui Province: my country's first bhikshuni was born.

A person who can become a bhikshuni must be an extraordinary person. This "first bhikshuni" is named Jiang Sumin. Her fate with Buddhism has been destined since her childhood.

Jiang Sumin was born in 1911 in a wealthy businessman family in Shenyang, Liaoning. The well-off Jiang family regarded their daughter as the apple of their eye and provided her with the best growth and education environment. They hoped that her daughter would become a talented girl who was proficient in music, chess, calligraphy and painting.

In 1918, 7-year-old Jiang Sumin went to a private school to study under the arrangement of her parents. She was smart and studious and quickly mastered basic cultural knowledge. In addition to studying, she often went to the temple next to the private school to listen to the monks reciting scriptures.

The scriptures are obscure and difficult to understand, and few people can listen to them all morning. However, Jiang Sumin at a young age seems to be "endowed". She is not only fascinated by these scriptures, but also often has her own opinions on some scriptures.

When she walked into the temple to ask the monks questions, the monks couldn't help but be startled when they looked at the young Jiang Sumin: "It is really rare to have such unique insights at such a young age."

Buddhism attaches great importance to "people with a predestined relationship." The abbot of the temple saw that Jiang Sumin had a deep connection with Buddhism and gave her some scriptures and Buddhist books for her to study.

After getting acquainted with the temple monks, Jiang Sumin often went to the temple to discuss Buddhist scriptures with the monks after school. Over time, Jiang Sumin's parents discovered something unusual about her.

They were unhappy when they learned that their daughter loved Buddhist culture . They thought it was not "respectable" for a girl to study Buddhist scriptures every day.

But after Jiang Sumin's explanation, they saw Jiang Sumin's seriousness. Since worshiping Buddha and doing good deeds is a good thing, Jiang's parents did not interfere any more.

After becoming a monk, she never forgot to study medicine and save people.

While studying Buddhism , Jiang Sumin also learned acupuncture from the abbot of the temple. Although she was not good at what she learned, she could also treat common diseases.

More than ten years later, Jiang Sumin reached the age of marriage. Under the arrangement of her parents, she got married and started a family. If she had not been in a war-torn era, perhaps she would not have decisively chosen to become a monk.

Living in troubled times, Jiang Sumin suffered from the war. Her parents passed away due to the war, and her family became impoverished. Without a stable home, she had to flee all the way.

In 1940, 29-year-old Jiang Sumin arrived in Wutai Mountain. She was penniless and felt heartbroken when she saw the war outside and the wailing of the people. After careful consideration, she chose to become a monk and become a nun. She named herself "Renyi".

She used the Dharma name to remind herself: I hope that I can follow my original intention and become a monk who saves all sentient beings.

Master Renyi devoted herself to spiritual practice in the temple. While she was studying Buddhism, she also did not forget to study medicine and helped many poor people solve their illnesses.

Master Renyi is a kind-hearted doctor. She knows very well that her "rudimentary" medical skills cannot save seriously ill and injured patients, so she has the desire to further learn medical skills.

Abbot Xiantong of Wutai Mountain was very supportive of Master Renyi’s idea. With his strong support, Master Renyi entered Shenyang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1942 for further study.

She cherished this hard-won learning opportunity, so she worked extremely hard after enrolling.

Master Renyi has gained a lot from the systematic and professional medical training. After four years of study, her medical skills have made great progress.

In 1946, after successfully graduating from school, she started free clinics and saved many people who were suffering from illnesses and injuries, and won unanimous praise from the local people.

As a monk, while caring about the people, she also cared about the country. In the 1950s, when the Korean War to resist U.S. aggression and aid Korea broke out, she signed up to join the army and followed the Korean Volunteer Army to fight in Korea in 1951.

Master Renyi was responsible for treating the wounded on the battlefield. When faced with enemy artillery attacks, she never backed down and saved lives and healed the wounded with a spirit of disregarding death.

In order to rescue the wounded, Renyi Division almost lost her life on the battlefield too many times. Although she knew the dangers of rescuing the wounded on the front line, she still shuttled through the smoke of gunfire, just to regain her comrades from the hands of death.

He spent his whole life doing good deeds and ended up well.

Whenever the volunteers recall Mrs. Renyi, they will be in awe of her: "That was a good doctor who sacrificed himself for others."

After the end of the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea, Mrs. Renyi was assigned a "formal job." In an era of material scarcity, it was extremely difficult for many people to have formal jobs and stable incomes. However, after working as a "sitting doctor" for a period of time, Mrs. Renyi chose to practice medicine to save people.

Carrying heavy medicinal materials stone millstones and wearing simple nun clothes, Master Renyi walked and practiced medicine until 1983, when the 72-year-old Master Renyi decided to settle down.

This year, she accidentally arrived at the quiet Jiuhua Mountain . She entered the temple and lived in the Bodhi Pavilion on the second floor.

Wherever there are people, there are rivers and lakes. Master Renyi and Master Kuanxiu downstairs are often at odds with each other due to various issues. Master Renyi does not want to care about them and chooses to "take a step back and the world will be brighter", but this kind of embarrassment of looking up but not looking down makes her uncomfortable.

When she discovered the Tonghui Zen Forest temple that had been in disrepair, she decided to repair it.

It is not a small project for an old man in his seventies to renovate a temple. She must first apply for approval and then find a decoration team to carry out the renovation. The whole project requires a lot of funds.

Master Renyi used her life savings to renovate the temple. She dragged her old body to participate in every detail of the project, striving for its early and successful completion.

After more than two years of decoration, Tonghui Zen Forest Temple has been completely renewed and revitalized. Every stone tablet and piece of wood in the courtyard is full of Master Renyi’s hard work.

She did not wait quietly after the Zen monastery was repaired, but took her disciples out to promote Buddhism, cure diseases and save people. Until 1995, she and her disciples returned to Tonghui Zen Monastery. After a period of meditation, Master Renyi had a premonition that her end was approaching.

After seven days without eating or drinking, she felt the time was right, so she gathered her disciples together to explain her funeral arrangements, and then passed away.

On November 28, 1995, Master Renyi passed away. According to her instructions during her lifetime, the disciples who were filled with grief prepared "urn sitting objects" and placed them in the vat, preparing to open the vat to retrieve the Dharmakaya three years later.
