After the Tang Dynasty, the "Flesh Buddha" began to emerge in Buddhism. That is, after passing away, he sat in a jar and put a jar on it. After three years, if it did not rot, he would stick a gold foil to shape his body, worship it in the temple, and receive incense. However, it is not easy to keep the body from rotting forever.

In China, there are only 30 "Flesh Buddhas" that have been preserved so far, 15 of which are on Jiuhua Mountain...
There is a "Flesh Buddha" floating across the ocean to Japan. This is the Infinite Master of the Tang Dynasty.
Monk Wuji is from Ruizhou, Guangdong. He traveled all over the world throughout his life, practiced Zen Buddhism, and had profound virtues. He once built a house on stones, also known as Stone Monk .
In 790 AD, the 91-year-old Wuji Master predicted that his deadline was approaching, so he returned to his hometown Nantai Temple in Hengshan in Hunan. He meditated every day and refused to eat, and his disciples were confused.

He took out more than a hundred herbs he collected all year round and asked his disciples to boil them. He drank more than a dozen bowls of medicinal soup every day, and after drinking it, he often sweated profusely. No matter how the puzzled disciples dissuaded him, he would not explain.
This lasted for more than a month, and the master had become red in his skin, thin in his body, and his eyes were as bright as torch. He drank for several more days. One day, he chanted the Buddha's name and meditated in Anxiang. When the disciples discovered it, the master had passed away.
After a while, the master's body did not rot, but instead emitted a strange fragrance. Everyone was surprised and lamented that he had a profound skill in his practice. Everyone decided to build a temple dedicated to the master's body.

After the temple was built, the incense was very popular, and there were endless good men and women from far and near, which continued until the end of the Qing Dynasty.
When the Republic of China arrived, smoke of gunpowder broke out everywhere, and wars were frequent. In this chaotic time, a Japanese spy, Shiro Watanabe, came to the temple and saw Master Wuji's incorruptible body. He felt a desire to take it for himself. He tried his best to have bad ideas.
He designed to poison the little monk in the temple and smuggle Master Wuji's body outside the temple to hide it.
Soon after, a fire broke out in the temple and the temple was razed to the ground. People thought that Master Wuji's body was destroyed in the fire.
In the late stage of the Anti-Japanese War, Shiro Watanabe saw that the Japanese were in a desperate situation, so he disguised himself as a cargo and put it on a ship to Japan for residence in another country. Later, he felt that it was not safe enough, so he transferred his body to an underground warehouse in the suburbs of Tokyo to hide.

Unfortunately, Shiro Watanabe didn't live long and died of illness in 1947. He wrote this matter down. When later generations sorted out his diary, they discovered this secret that he had never shown to others. In the warehouse, they found the body of Master Wuji.
Uncovering the covered silk cloth, the experts on the scene were shocked. They saw that the old monk's physical eyes were like lightning, as if a living monk was meditating and chanting Buddha's name devoutly... It was really hard to believe that this was a physical Buddha that had been preserved for thousands of years. Why can it be kept so intact when exposed to the air all year round? Experts conducted further identification and found that the body and abdomen were empty and drugs were penetrated from the body and the body was inside and outside. Maybe this is the reason why it has not rotted for thousands of years!

As for what herbs Master Wuji drinks, no records are found, and it is still an unsolved mystery to this day.
But there is another saying that the infinite body Buddha was stolen from the Living Buddha Palace in Zhangzhou by Japanese dentists Yamazaki and his son from Zhangzhou during the Xinhai Revolution in 1911. He was smuggled to Japan via Xiamen . He was first exhibited at Waseda University , which caused a huge sensation in the Buddhist community. Later, due to the outbreak of the war, the flesh-body Buddha was sealed and hidden.
According to Japanese media reports, because of a supernatural incident, the body Buddha was placed in the Yokosuka Miyako Temple, and it was settled down and has been placed here since then.

In the 1990s, the Japanese side expressed its intention to return the Buddha of the body. The Buddhist worlds of China and Japan also held many negotiations on this matter, but in the end, due to various reasons, the Buddha of the body was unable to return to his hometown. Today, Master Wuji's body is still preserved in Yokohama Sochi Temple and has been regarded as Japan's "national treasure".
