Master Tongbian was an eminent monk in the Yuan Dynasty. He was the son of Xie Yuan's maternal wife in Louis County, Baoding. His name was Xie Defu. He was extremely intelligent since he was a child, and his parents loved him very much.
When Xie Defu was seven years old, he suddenly said to his parents: "Mom and dad, I want to become a monk."
Xie Yuanwai and his wife thought the child was joking, so they replied: "You are a young kid, do you know what it means to become a monk?" ?" Then he asked Mr. Xie to play in the mud.
That night, Xie Yuanwai and his wife had a dream at the same time. In the dream, they saw Guanyin Bodhisattva.
Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva said to them, your son is the second coming of an eminent monk. Since he is willing to become a monk, he is pursuing his true nature, so you agree to him.
After Xie Yuanwai and his wife woke up, they told each other about their dreams and found that they had actually dreamed of the same situation.
They were deeply surprised. After discussing for a long time, the couple made up their mind and said: "In this case, we will follow the inspiration of Guanyin Bodhisattva and let our children become monks."
In this way, Mr. Xie was able to become a monk. He was accompanied by his parents. Next, I came to Xingsheng Temple and worshiped the eminent monk Master Vacuum as my teacher. I became a novice monk and was given the title "Tongbian".
A few years later, Tongbian received full ordination and became a real monk.
After becoming a monk, Monk Tongbian practiced hard for twenty years. He meditated every day, chanted sutras and worshiped the Buddha, and never dared to slack off.
One day, monk Tongbian was walking in the temple. Seeing that he had walked on the stone path that had been stepped on countless times, he suddenly became enlightened.
Since then, Monk Tongbian's reputation has skyrocketed, and he is famous throughout the jungle.
In the early years of Huangqing , the eminent monk Wan Shanshou was ordered to preside over a grand water and land fasting meeting. Monk Tongbian was invited to the scene to give a sermon.
On that day, eminent monks from all over the world gathered together. Monk Tongbian slowly ascended to his throne and said a few verses. Suddenly, his body emitted a dazzling white light, which made the sky much brighter.
In the light, various auspicious signs of gods, humans, and bodhisattvas appeared, which lasted for half an hour before gradually dissipating.
When everyone saw this, they clasped their hands in admiration. This matter was later learned by the imperial court, and the emperor issued an edict to confer the title of "Master Tongbian" on the monk Tongbian, and gave him a "gold-lined monk's robe" as a sign of respect.
years later, Master Tongbian passed away peacefully. When he passed away, a white light appeared from the top of his head, shining extremely brightly in all directions, recreating the auspicious appearance of the sermon.
The disciples burned his body, obtained dozens of relics among the ashes, and built a pagoda to worship him devoutly in memory.
