Children always blink, beware of tics
Medical guidance: Pediatrics Professor Li Yirui
Text/Pediatrics Dr. Lai Feifei and Ouyang Xuezhi attending physician
Children always blink involuntarily. What is the reason? This may be due to allergies or eye diseases. In addition, parents must also be careful whether their children may have tics?
What is tics?
Many parents have heard of ADHD, but they rarely know about tics. Parents should pay attention that tics are different from ADHD!
Twitch disorders are mainly manifested as involuntary, aimless, repetitive, and rapid motor tics or vocal tics of one or more muscles. The symptoms of tics can be mild and severe, and it progresses in a wave-like manner. New tic symptoms can replace old tic symptoms, or new tic symptoms appear on the basis of the original tic symptoms.
tics are more common in children aged 2-12, and frequent blinking is often the first symptom. There may be cases where involuntary opening of your mouth, sniffing your mouth or tilting your mouth, shaking your head, nodding or tilting your neck, shrugging your shoulders, clearing your throat, sniffing your trunk or limb twitching. Some children will be accompanied by impulsive hyperactivity, timidity, inattention, obsessive concepts or compulsive behaviors, sleep disorders and personality disorders. Some children also have local discomfort or itching, cold, pain, etc. before twitching.
Tic disorder is a chronic mental disorder. In addition to the personalized treatments formulated by doctors, the cooperative intervention of the family is also of great help to the treatment. Family cooperative intervention mainly includes the following points:
1. Parents should understand the characteristics of the repetitive and changing tics and the chronic course of the disease so that they will not be overly anxious.
2. Parents need to correct bad parenting methods and must not punish their children for this. They must be clear that the symptoms of multiple tics are uncontrollable and are not intentional.
3. Parents should care for the child but not pay too much attention to his symptoms;
4. When a child has a tic attack, parents should learn to divert their attention to reduce their symptoms.
5. Parents should learn to eliminate various incentives, reasonably arrange their children's daily routine and activity content, reduce their children's learning pressure and time to watch TV and play computers, and avoid their children's excessive excitement, tension and fatigue. Guide children to participate in sports and entertainment activities appropriately to enhance their self-confidence and self-control. These all help to help children relieve symptoms.
6. Children need to strengthen nutrition in their diet to avoid containing food additives, pigments, caffeine , etc., because such things can induce or aggravate tics symptoms.
