Microsoft announced the launch of "Project Volterra" or Windows Dev Kit 2023 - Microsoft's first mini PC powered by the ARM processor. The device is designed to help Windows developers bring their applications to ARM devices and help popularize the category among consumers.
Windows Dev Kit 2023 (announced at the Build 2022 conference earlier this year) is based on the Snapdragon 8cx third-generation computing platform, equipped with 32GB of memory and 512GB SSD. The ports include three USB-A, two USB-C and one Mini DisplayPortham2, allowing users to connect up to three monitors, including two 4K 60Hz monitors.
The computer is also equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) that allows developers to bring AI-based capabilities to their applications and projects. Microsoft says the NPU in Windows Dev Kit 2023 is about 90 times faster than traditional processors, or 20 times faster than GPU when using a specific AI model.
Windows Dev Kit 2023 is another sign that Microsoft is taking Windows on ARM more seriously. Earlier this month, Microsoft released the Surface Pro 9 lineup, including variants based on Intel and ARM, with optional 5G connectivity. Windows Dev Kit 2023, or "Project Volterra", will allow developers to bring a better experience to those who choose Windows devices based on ARM processor . It should help break the vicious cycle of "no apps-no users-no apps" and make Windows on ARM a more attractive option.
