Question: How did you spend your childhood and youth? When you were young, wasn’t you just a girl with a very strong curiosity?
Yan Ning: is not. I may have some endless imaginations. When I was a child, I never thought of being a scientist because I was more interested in reading novels, such as fairy tales, myths, classical novels, and Chinese and foreign novels. So I always thought that in the future I would work in liberal arts related to work, or be a journalist, or even a writer. was my ideal when I was a child.
Question: What is the environment and family you grew up with?
Yan Ning: My family is very ordinary, and my parents are both working-class. When we were young, we didn’t have much homework. We basically completed it at school and didn’t have much interest classes. After going home for dinner, my favorite thing was to listen to storytelling . I still remember that there was “The Legend of Nezha” at that time, and then I rested on time at 8 o’clock. It's such a very ordinary and relaxing environment. When I was a child, I think back now that I am very stocked.

Question: So how did you embark on the path of biology research later?
Yan Ning: When we were in high school, we had to divide the liberal arts and science classes in the second year of high school. Of course, I signed up for a liberal arts class as soon as possible, and then my class teacher took it back. Why? Because of my grades, I almost always ranked first in the whole grade in every exam.The teacher said that if you learn , mathematics, physics, chemistry, and chemistry, you will not be afraid of traveling all over the world. If you have such good grades, you will come here to study theory. Why do you need to study literature?
Actually, I still can’t agree with it when I think back now. I think there are top scorers in every industry, but I don’t hate science, and I like our class teacher very much. When I applied for the college entrance examination, my ideal was always to study literature, but I wanted to apply for Chinese in Science. At that time, there was a Chinese Department of Science and Technology at Tsinghua University, and I especially wanted to apply for it.
But at this time my parents' opinions had a great impact on me, because we had a saying at that time that the 21st century was the century of life sciences . My dad asked me to apply for the biology department.
The reason why I report to the biology department is because I don’t disgust it. Our biology teacher was a cool female teacher at that time, and what she taught was also very interesting.
Question: What kind of message do you have to young girls and boys?
Yan Ning: My message to them is to be brave to be yourself. I always say this, be brave to be yourself. Be brave to pursue your dreams and don’t be influenced by those inherent and traditional ideas.
This is my expectation for the future generation. Maybe because as scientists, we are always thinking that it is a great and cool thing to keep breaking through the boundaries.
So the future will still depend on young people, right? I hope they will have greater courage to constantly break the boundaries and continue to push forward human civilization.
