Introduction: As we all know, the Mediterranean diet with more vegetables and less meat is good for your body, but flatulence will increase after eating. It is commonly known as farting a lot. What is going on? A Spanish research team conducted a cross-randomized study on the gastrointestinal effects of a Western-style diet and a plant-based Mediterranean diet. Although the difference in microbial composition between the two diets is relatively small, there is a big difference in microbial metabolism.

The research team published the research results in the journal " Nutrients ", a paper titled " Differential Effects of Western and Mediterranean-Type Diets on Gut Microbiota: A Metagenomics and Metabolomics Approach ":

A group of researchers affiliated with several institutions in Spain found that people who switched to plant-based diets had increased flatulence, which indicates that the gut microbiota is healthier. In a paper published in the journal Nutrients, the team described their experiments on diet, stool volume, and flatulence on healthy male volunteers.

Changing from a diet rich in fat or carbohydrates to a diet rich in vegetables will bring more flatulence, especially cruciferous vegetables (such as cabbage, Chinese cabbage, etc.) Cauliflower, rapeseed, mustard, water radish etc.). But as the researchers who conducted this new work pointed out, few scholars have studied the association between diet and flatulence.

To learn more about the impact of switching to plant-based diets on digestion and intestinal biota, the researchers recruited 18 healthy adult male volunteers to assist in the research. Everyone has to eat a Western-style diet, and then switch to a two-week Mediterranean diet with more vegetables and less meat.

During the study period, the volunteers should count the number of bowel movements per day, and each stool sample should be collected and weighed. They also record the number of times they pass each day and undergo random tests, including the use of balloons to measure the amount of gas expelled during flatulence episodes.

Researchers found that changes in 's diet did not change the number of bowel movements of volunteers per day, but changed the amount of stool . Researchers found that a diet with more vegetables and less meat doubled the amount of feces . The researchers pointed out that this is due to a large increase in bacterial growth and excretion. The data also showed that in a plant-based diet, the number of flatulences per day increased by 7 times, and the amount of gas discharged each time increased by about 50%. The researchers pointed out that this is due to the fermentation of plant materials in the intestines.

researchers said that their experiments show that plant-based diets can promote the growth of more beneficial intestinal bacteria, thereby making the intestines healthier.
