Morita Therapy was founded in Japan in the 1920s by Dr. Masama Morita from Japan. The establishment of Morita's therapy did not originate from the development of a psychological and psychiatric theory like psychoanalysis, nor did it come from the extension of the results of an experimental study like behavioral therapy. It is the result of the rational combination and improvement and creation of Morita Masamoto after decades of exploring mental therapy, and then based on quiet therapy, homework therapy, persuasion therapy, and life therapy. This also incorporates and reflects Morita Masato's personal growth experience, rich content of his personality, and strong oriental cultural colors.

During this period, he vomited for the first time and could not relieve himself for several consecutive days. The diagnosis was not clear in the internal medicine department, and the symptoms were improved gradually after symptomatic treatment such as infusion. After graduating from undergraduate degree, he started working and got married at the age of 28. After marriage, the couple had a good relationship and did not vomit again. After his wife gave birth at the age of 31, the baby died of suffocation. The patient suffered a mental blow and developed anxiety, pessimism, insomnia, and vomiting, but it was slightly milder than the previous time. After three months of symptomatic treatment, he gradually recovered. At the age of 33, his wife was about to give birth for the second time, and the patient began to have previous symptoms. After his wife gave birth, the baby died shortly due to illness, and the patient's mental symptoms and vomiting became worse. I vomited after every meal, couldn't work, and needed someone else to take care of my life. Although the symptoms were relieved after treatment, I often felt palpitations, chest tightness, and stomach discomfort after that, and I began to take quick-acting heart pills and other Chinese and Western stomach medicines frequently.
When the wife gave birth for the third time from the age of 35, although everything went well before and after the child was born and the mother and son were safe, the patient was still anxious, nervous and vomited. After careful care by relatives, Chinese and Western medicine were asked to treat it in multiple ways, and the condition was relieved again. However, after that, vomiting can occur when the child has a fever, his wife is sick, busy work, and fatigue. The patient underwent gastrointestinal tract imaging, gastroscopy, , electrocardiogram, B ultrasound , echocardiography and various tests in various hospitals. Except for a mild esophageal hiatal hernia caused by dysplasia, no other positive signs were found. This time, due to fatigue, vomiting failed to relieve the patient for three consecutive months, and the search for medical treatment was ineffective. Later, he sought treatment with a psychological counselor. After the patient was hospitalized, he vomited between 3 to 4 times and more than 10 times a day, accompanied by nervousness, anxiety, trembling throughout his body, restlessness, and extremely weak. After physical examination, Morita psychological treatment was started on the tenth day of admission. The method was inpatient Morita therapy, and the following is the treatment process.
Absolute bed rest period:
The patient was in bed on the first day and began to feel irritable and pessimistic the next day. He was suspicious of the treatment method, sadly cried, sighed all day long, his appetite decreased, and his vomiting worsened, increasing to 8 to 9 times a day. In response to this situation, according to the principle of Morita's treatment, in addition to still requiring the patient to keep a diary every day, he also raised several related questions to the patient to guide him to think deeply to improve his understanding of his personal psychological characteristics, , the formation of pathological psychology, the essence of current symptoms, and treatment methods. He did not pay special attention to and deal with symptoms such as vomiting during daily rounds. The patient was in great pain at this time, but he also realized that the doctor's attitude and the questions asked were all directed at the personal pathological psychology. He began to receive guidance from the doctor and gained a new understanding.
Excerpt from the patient's diary: "When the cause of the disease, no matter how diverse it is, it is caused by anxiety. Don't treat the disease very seriously, but you should let it go naturally and don't always focus on your body. Since you are not sick, why are you so neurotic? It's ridiculous to think about it now. You are like an old and sick man, contacting you everywhere to see a doctor every day, and it's really a fake." During this period of treatment, if you vomit severely, you will take 1,000 ml of oral rehydration saline. Vomiting began to relieve after aggravation. The patient's symptoms changed from tension, anxiety, resistance to calmness and cooperation, and the whole body tremor did not occur again.
Light operating period:
Patients still have severe recurring vomiting at this period, but they can persist in working as required treatment, cultivate confidence and endurance through simple labor, and change their attitude and awareness of symptoms under the guidance of doctors, so as to accept the symptoms without confronting them, and be freed from the repeated fear and psychological conflicts for many years. After four consecutive days of light homework and accompanied by 2 to 3 vomiting and mental pain every day, the patient began to understand and partially accepted the symptoms, indicating that he was no longer anxious to eliminate the symptoms, and he was no longer nervous or afraid of vomiting every time. As the patient received guidance from the doctor, his attitude changed and his vomiting was significantly reduced. On the fourth day of light work, the patient began to experience the ease of relief from his sorrow. The patient wrote in his diary: "Although I have some understanding of the theory of Morita's therapy, the key is practice. Today I insist on staying in bed as little as possible and keep up with the treatment procedures. After a day of work, although I feel tired, I feel very good mentally."
Re-work period:
The patient's performance and psychological experience during this period have been significantly improved, and he is working hard now. As the treatment progresses, tension, anxiety, pessimism, etc. have basically disappeared. Vomiting naturally stops on the third day of the heavy operation period. The patient was very happy and excited, and was very satisfied with this time without drug treatment. His confidence in treatment became stronger and stronger. The patient wrote in his diary: "Work entered the third day, and I still felt soreness in my back, but I felt an indescribable feeling of comfort. It seems that it is beneficial to exercise more. I experienced that there was a great laziness in my life before, and I was not very interested in life. But I focused on my attention. It seems that Morita's spirit should direct attention outside. It makes sense to carry out a constructive life, which is worthy of serious reflection."
Recovery period (social life preparation period):
Patients can basically adapt to work and family life when returning to their unit and family, and experience a unique mood of joy. After working for a few days, they have anxiety, hand shaking, and vomiting due to work stress, but it is very mild. At this time, the patient is guided in accordance with the practical principles and methods of Morita's therapy, and the patient is encouraged to work hard as required. The patient expressed that he would accept these guidance and be confident that he would live like a healthy person and re-establish his own healthy psychological coping methods.
The patient insisted on working with the encouragement of the doctor and did not take any medication. After a week, the symptoms naturally relieved and were able to adapt to the current job. It is also relaxing and enjoyable to go out. In the next ten days, I calmly and naturally withstood the work adjustment, the child’s illness, my tooth extraction surgery and other incidents, and no symptoms of vomiting or anxiety occurred. Diet and physical strength have improved significantly, and the weight has increased by 4 kg. After follow-up three months, six months and one year later, the patient was in good work and life, and the symptoms did not recur, and he recovered.
Case 3: bulimia nervosa
patient, female, university education.
has good growth and development since childhood, and has menstruation at the age of 13, and is regular. At the age of 15, he was 1.54 meters tall and weighed 65 kilograms. He was known as Xiaopangpang. Once I stolen food left by my mother, and I was afraid of gaining weight and causing vomiting. After that, the number of vomiting gradually increased, resulting in weight loss. At the age of 16, his appetite increased sharply, with 1 kilogram of staple food for each meal, plus a large number of vegetables. After each meal, I used my hands to induce vomiting, and then ate snacks. 16. The menstrual cycle ranges from 20 to 90 days to the time of admission. After eating after the age of 18, you can vomit on your own. After graduating from college, I worked in a company. In addition to three meals a day after going to school and working, I also secretly ate a lot of snacks, sometimes eating 1 kilogram of biscuits in one breath, and then vomiting after eating. Because they vomit after each meal, the patient never dares to eat in a place without a bathroom.
In the past two years, my family found that the patient had vomited after binge eating, and tried to restrict him from eating staple foods and snacks, but it was useless. The laboratory test results of CT and other digestive systems were normal. Because the patient's work was affected by binge eating and vomiting (he could not travel on business), he was hospitalized for treatment under the persuasion of his family. After admission, no abnormalities were found in the tummy and nervous system examinations. They were 1.58 meters tall, weighed 49 kg, and had no perceptual, thinking or emotional disorders.I said that I couldn't help but want to eat too much, and vomited because I was afraid of getting fat. Now I can vomit out the contents of my stomach with a little force. I don't feel pain about eating a lot and vomiting after vomiting. I don't care about irregular menstruation and am willing to cooperate with the doctor to treat his eating disorder.
was admitted to the hospital and was diagnosed with bulimia nervosa. Start routine treatment, first limit the patient's staple food to 8 taels per day, limit his snacks, and give drug treatment at the same time. During the treatment, patients often ate double meals, stole snacks from others, and vomited after each meal. The treatment was ineffective for 4 weeks, and the patient still had a lot of appetite and vomited after each meal. The patient believed that he would not vomit when his weight dropped to 47 kg. The patient was granted permission to undergo Morita treatment and stopped taking all antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs. Only three meals a day (quantity) are given during absolute bedtime. Patients are welcome to limited snacks and fruits, and can ensure that they do not vomit after lunch. On the sixth day of the absolute bedridden period, the patient was emotionally anxious and ended the first phase of treatment one day in advance.
Patients in Morita Therapy Phase II (seven weeks of hospitalization) can talk less according to the requirements and keep a diary every night. The patient's diary reported that when the desire to vomit after a meal appeared in his mind, he felt very uneasy and anxious. The doctor encouraged the patient to play table tennis after meals and found that she liked to play table tennis very much, so she found a patient or medical staff to play table tennis for her after meals to get through her anxiety stage. After the second phase of treatment, the patient's vomiting frequency was reduced to once a day or no vomiting, and his weight increased to 48.5 kg. During the eighth week of hospitalization, I went out for half a day to visit my father who was hospitalized. After returning to the hospital, I was unstable and irritable, and vomited after every meal. The patient believed that his illness had not been cured, and his father was hospitalized due to illness, feeling depressed and losing confidence in treatment.
Doctors repeatedly encouraged patients to actively participate in the third phase of Morita therapy treatment and asked the patients to guide the artists in the blackboard newspaper in the ward, so that patients can gradually go deep into the treatment. Once, the patient went to Xiangshan with the patients and medical staff from Morita's group to hike. The green mountains, green waters, red flowers and green trees made everyone feel relaxed and happy. Everyone sang, danced and had a picnic together, and they were very happy. On the way home, I asked the patient why he didn't vomit. The patient was surprised to find that he had no idea of vomiting after the meal - "I didn't realize it". The doctor immediately summoned all the patients to discuss this matter. The patient realized that as long as he devoted himself to a certain activity, he could completely remove the thought of vomiting and without pain. He summarized himself as "understanding what is true" and "living like a healthy person can get health." After that, the patient's confidence increased greatly. The third and fourth phases were successfully completed according to Morita's treatment requirements. When the Morita treatment was performed, the patient was able to avoid vomiting after each meal.
also found that as I stopped vomiting after eating, my strong appetite also disappeared and I also gained a new understanding of my weight. When he was discharged from the hospital in the twelfth week, his weight increased to 49.5 kg. He had a normal diet and did not vomit after meals. He felt that his weight was completely within the standard weight range and there was nothing to worry about. After eight weeks of discharge, the patient was followed up. He had normal diet and did not vomit after eating. He weighed 49.5 kg and his menstrual cycle was 40 days.
Through the above three typical cases, I hope everyone can deepen their understanding of Morita therapy. At the same time, everyone is welcome to send private messages to me or comment, communicate and make progress together.
Next, I will talk about my experience of Morita therapy in tomorrow's article.
