My excerpt (1212) Richard Grigg Philip Zimbardo " Psychology and Life "
★ Humanistic theory 's core view is that individuals are in the process of continuous change and growth.
★ Humanism Two types of therapies in traditional treatment: client-central therapy and Gestalt therapy.
★The primary goal of client-centered therapy is to promote individual mental health. This approach is based on the assumption that all people have a basic tendency to realize their self-potentiality. Rogers believes that "an innate tendency of organisms is to develop their full abilities to maintain or enhance their survival status."
★The basic therapeutic strategy of client-centered therapy is to recognize, accept and clarify the client's feelings. These are done in an atmosphere of unconditional positive attention, namely, accepting and respecting visitors without making any value judgments about them. The therapist also opens his feelings and thoughts to the client without reservation. In addition to being sincere, the therapist should experience the client’s feelings as much as possible. This complete empathy requires the therapist to see the client as a valuable and capable person, rather than a judgement and evaluation object, a person who needs help in the process of discovering his or her own personality.
★The focus of Gestalt therapy is to integrate the individual's mind and body into one whole. This treatment can help clients express their repressed feelings and recognize that unresolved events in past conflicts are brought into new realities, and that individuals can only grow if they resolve these events.
★The most famous method for Gestalt treatment is the empty chair technology. This technique allows the client to face and explore those strong feelings that are not expressed, which may be these feelings that have been hindering the client's mental health.
