After the war, the 5th company was awarded the second-class collective merit , and Mao Zhangmiao was awarded the personal first-class merit . A few months later, he was ordered to do something in danger and once again achieved first-class merit. In the second stage of the Fifth Battle, the main force of the Volunteer Army moved eastward, targeting the South Korean puppet troops to annihilate the enemy. The mission of the 20th Army of the 9th Corps is to break through the Soyang River head-on, penetrate in the direction of Fuping-ri, Mysan-ri and Wumazhi, and cut off the retreat route of the South Korean puppet 7th and 9th Divisions. Among them, the 178th Regiment of the 60th Division was tasked with penetrating the Five Horse Standoff behind enemy lines. Regiment leader Wang Ronggui gave the task to the 2nd Forward Battalion.

Wumazhi is 60 kilometers away from Zhaoyang River, and the enemy has set up multiple lines of defense on the way. In order to ensure the completion of the mission, Tao Miaogen, commander of the 2nd Battalion, designated the 6th and 4th companies as the first and second sharp knife companies, and the 5th company as the reserve team. Although he was a reserve team, Mao Zhangmiao did not relax at all. He made two plans for insertion and attack, drew a detailed route map, and conducted careful deductions with the squad and platoon leaders. At that time, some soldiers believed that this was a waste of effort, because under normal circumstances, the 6th and 4th companies would definitely complete the mission.

But an accident happened. First, the 6th company lost its way while chasing the fleeing enemy after capturing Yin Yangli; then the 4th company also made the same mistake and got lost while chasing the enemy in Zhili. The two sharp knives made mistakes one after another. Battalion Commander Tao Miaogen was so anxious that he had to urgently pull up the 5th company of the reserve team. Although he was ordered at the last minute, Mao Zhangmiao did not panic at all because he had made sufficient preparations in advance. He learned the lessons of the 6th Company and the 4th Company, and ordered each platoon and squad not to fight along the way, let alone pursue the fleeing enemies for loot. As long as they arrived at Wumazhi on time, they would "block many, many enemies."

When he said this, the 20-year-old company commander swallowed unconsciously, his mind filled with images of prisoners and trophies. Under the leadership of Mao Zhangmiao, the 5th company marched for 12 hours and defeated 13 groups of enemy troops along the way. They arrived at Wumazhi around 7 a.m. on the 17th and immediately seized the commanding heights and built a position. An hour later, the enemy's defeated troops retreated. In order to escape the fate of being surrounded and annihilated, the enemy launched a crazy attack on the 5th company's position.

At Changjin Lake, even the 1st Marine Division, the number one ace of the US military, could not break through the position of the 5th company, let alone the South Korean puppet troops in the five-horse standoff. Fighting from early morning to noon, the enemies of the two divisions simply failed to break through the 5th company's blockade. After noon, the main force of the 20th Army came up. Most of the South Korean Puppet 7th Division and Puppet 9th Division were annihilated by cutting the knot with a sharp knife, and a few remnants of the enemy escaped in embarrassment. The two divisions failed to break through the blocking position of a company of the Volunteer Army. Li Qiwei was furious and canceled the designations of South Korea's Puppet 7th Division and Puppet 9th Division.

In this battle, more than 500 enemies were killed in five consecutive battles and more than 20 enemies were captured, including three US military advisers.
