Many studies have measured the prevalence of left-handed people worldwide. The leftyfretz.com website collected the results and compared them nationwide. Niall McCarthy of Statista collected the data in this infographic, most of which came from independent studies in different years. For example, the listed European countries are from a 2009 study by I.C. McManus, which found that the Netherlands is one of the countries with the highest left-handed use rate in the world, at 13.23%.
followed by the United States with 13.1%, while neighboring Canada has 12.8%.
In other places, the proportion of left-handers is much lower. China is a good example. According to statistics from leftyfretz.com, only 3.5% of people in China mainly use the left hand, which is actually higher than that recorded in many historical studies. Some people believe that the Chinese people’s disagreement with left-handers is one of the main reasons why people try to use their right hands mainly, while left-handers are often bullied, harassed, and labeled abnormally.
