According to China Business News on May 21, after nearly 10 years of service, Apple (AAPL, stock price of US$146.14, market value of US$2.4 trillion) may completely abandon the exclusive Lighting interface and switch to USB-C interface.
Recently, Apple's well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that Apple may release a new iPhone with a USB-C interface instead of a Lighting interface in the second half of 2023. Not only that, Apple products based on Lightning interface (AirPods, MagSafe charger) and accessories such as Magic Control keyboard/mouse/touchpad will also use USB-C interface.
Although Mac and iPad have used USB-C interfaces, Apple still adheres to the principle of "Lighting first" when selecting iPhone interfaces. As for why Apple has let go of the iPhone interface this time, it is generally speculated that it may be related to the EU.
It is understood that in 2019, the EU proposed to unify the interfaces of consumer electronic products such as smartphones sold in China into USB-C. Apple objected at that time, and the EU will formally enact the legislation in September this year to force the use of USB-C charging interfaces between mobile phones sold in China and other electronic devices.
"At present, USB-C interface has a large range of applications on smart devices, especially on Android smart devices." Major General Ding, a founder of Ding Technology, said that Apple's switching charging interfaces is due to administrative pressure, as well as many device compatibility and energy conservation and environmental protection considerations.

In fact, the industry saw the trend of USB-C interfaces to unify the world a few years ago, and the technology is becoming more and more mature. An employee of Shenzhen Xianying Technology, a USB-C manufacturer, previously told reporters that on the current 3C (computer, communication and consumer electronics ) devices, the USB-C interface has become the mainstream charging interface and is expanding to non-3C devices.
In 2012, Apple used the new Lightning interface on the iPhone 5, which was the first consumer electronics interface to support forward and reverse plugging at that time. Its advancedness can be said to be "out of the blue". It was not until nearly two years after the iPhone 5 was launched that the more mainstream USB-C interface was finalized today.
As for whether Apple abandons the Lightning interface mainly due to the forced use of USB-C interface by EU legislation, Sun Yanbiao said: "This statement makes sense, but Apple will not easily give up the Lightning interface on iPhone. It is estimated that it is still in the discussion stage."
It is reported that Apple quietly launched two previously rumored 35W dual Type-C chargers on its official website. Both chargers are priced at 399 yuan, but the charging cable needs to be purchased separately by consumers. The charger supports iPhone 8/iPhone 8 Plus or above models, Apple Watch full series, iPad mini 5/6, iPad 7/8/9, iPad Air 3/4/5, 11-inch iPad Pro, 12.9-inch iPad Pro, etc.
