The 9th Cross-Strait (Pingtan) Taekwondo Exchange Competition was held in Pingtan, Fujian on the 5th. 506 Taekwondo contestants from 26 teams on both sides of the Taiwan Strait participated in the competition to exchange Taekwondo skills.
Due to the impact of the epidemic, Taiwanese players were unable to arrive at the arena for offline communication in this competition. The organizer made full use of Internet technology and allowed players from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to compete across the air through video connection.

At the opening ceremony, the Taekwondo stunt performance team brought a series of cool performances such as stunts, breaking, and continuous backspin kicks. The continuous backspin kicks and foot breaking movements were dazzling. Afterwards, the exchange competition kicked off.
This competition consists of six events, including product trend, stunts, and competitions. They are divided into groups according to the age and kilogram level of the contestants. There are six groups including children's group, children's group, youth group, youth group, and adult group, to showcase Taekwondo skills in all aspects.
Zhang Chuanhui, deputy director of the Tourism and Culture and Sports Bureau of Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Zone, said that Pingtan is the fifth largest island in China and the closest place to the mainland of the motherland to Taiwan. "We undertake the important mission of exchanges with Taiwan and building a common home on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The continuous holding of the Taekwondo competition on the cross-strait has further promoted sports exchanges and cooperation among compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait."
Yang Yuanheng, vice chairman of Taiwan Taekwondo Sports Competition Association, pointed out through video that the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are indispensable. "This year, due to the impact of the epidemic, we cannot attend the venue. By opening a branch venue in Taiwan, we can conduct cloud communication through video."
Cross-strait Taekwondo Exchange Competition began in 2012 and has been held for nine consecutive sessions so far. With the original intention of building a platform for cross-strait sports enthusiasts, the organizer invites multiple Taiwanese teams to participate every year.

Chengzhong Taekwondo Chairman Li Chengzhong said that he hopes to use this competition to allow Taiwanese compatriots to come to Fujian more, further promote exchanges of Taekwondo sports skills across the Taiwan Strait while deepening the feelings of the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
At present, Pingtan is exploring the creation of a sports tourism cultural industry with the tourism industry as the carrier, cultural heritage as the soul, and sports as the vitality, focusing on the strategic positioning of "one island, two zones and three windows", and shaping sports into the core competitiveness of Pingtan International Tourism Island.
Zhang Chuanhui said that in the next step, Pingtan will make every effort to create a sports IP with "international style, youthful and fashionable", and first start the planning and construction of a number of key sports projects with core driving force such as the International Kitesurfing Center, the International Baseball and Softball Sports Event Center, the International Bicycling, and the Marathon Track to create a vibrant island for international brand events.
