Gutian, modern Gutian Town, is located in the northeast of Shanghang County, Fujian Province. It is the site of the famous "Gutian Conference" site, and is also a famous historical and cultural town in China and a national civilized village. The older generation of proletarian revolutionaries such as Mao Zedong, Zhu De, and Chen Yi have carried out great revolutionary practices on the red land of Gutian.

The ancient field means that there was a terrain in Huanglongkou in ancient times, which was similar to the word "field". The history of ancient fields with written records began in the Tang Dynasty. From the establishment of Shanghangchang in the fourth year of Dali in the Tang Dynasty (769) to the fifth year of Chunhua in the Northern Song Dynasty (994) Shanghang was promoted from Changzhou to the northeast of the territory under its jurisdiction to Gutiandi. During the Southern Song Dynasty, Deng Jiafang first appeared here, and then the surnames such as Xie, Lai, and Zhang moved in. It belonged to ancient fields during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1929, Mao Zedong, Zhu De and Chen Yi led the Red Fourth Army to Gutian to establish the Soviet Government, which belongs to the Northern Five Districts under the jurisdiction of the Soviet Government of Shanghang County. In 1935, Gutian and Jiaoyang were merged into the fourth district, and Yuntian Township Office was established in 1938. In 1949, Fu Baicui participated in the Western Fujian Uprising in Guoche and established the Yuntian Branch of the Western Fujian Revolutionary Action Committee. It was liberated in September of the same year and belonged to the Gujiao District. In June 1950, it was renamed the Seventh District; on March 21, 1953, it was established as the 13th District Office, called Yuntian Town; in 1956, it was merged into Gujiao District; in March 1958, it was abolished and merged into the township, and on October 1 of the same year, it was merged with Fuli, Buyun and Guoche Township; in March 1960, Jiaoyang and Gutian merged to establish Gutian People's Commune. In 1984, the administrative and social institutions were separated and Gutian Township was established. The township was abolished in September 1986 and has been built in Gutian Town until now.

In January 1930, Mao Zedong wrote the glorious book "Sparks Can Start a Prairie" at the Xiecheng Store in Laifang Village, Gutian. On October 30, 2014, the entire army political work conference, known as the "Xingutian Conference", was held in Gutian Town. The next day, General Secretary Xi Jinping attended the meeting and delivered an important speech, emphasizing that the political work of the army is the strong guarantee for the Party to achieve the goal of strengthening the army under the new situation, and that political work should give full play to the lifeline role of political work in strengthening the army and promoting the army. On August 1, 2017, at the meeting to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in his important speech: "The fundamental principles and systems of the Party's absolute leadership over the army originated from the Nanchang Uprising, were based on the Sanwan adaptation and established at the Gutian Conference. It is the political characteristics and fundamental advantages of the People's Army that are completely different from all old troops."
