The Harbin Earthquake Observation Center Station, a key project established by the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, was recently completed and will be put into use after the staff is fully equipped. The initial positioning time for the earthquakes that occurred in the jurisdiction and surrounding 50 kilometers is no more than 5 minutes. It is the first comprehensive earthquake observation station in Harbin City with a manned duty. The total investment of the project is 10.62 million yuan and the total construction area is 1627.79㎡. After the internal functions of the Harbin Earthquake Observation Center Station are improved, it will also become a popular science education base for primary and secondary school students in Harbin.

1 earthquake observation center is equipped with a mysterious "exploration well"

Harbin earthquake observation center is located in the Majiagou Sanhetun section of Xiangfang District. The observation methods cover more than ten measurement items such as earthquake measurement, strong earthquake, water level, water temperature, body strain, vertical pendulum inclination.

How does this "high-end" earthquake observation center observe earthquakes? Simply put, it is mainly divided into "two steps":

1 first step, there are 4 monitoring and detection wells in the Harbin Earthquake Observation Center Station, and each well is placed in the most advanced earthquake monitor , which is currently the country's bidding and procurement. The probe of the monitor sensor is located underground and not placed in the seismic observation center room, mainly to prevent external interference. Because there are electromagnetic interference, traffic vibration interference in the urban area and surrounding areas of Harbin, the interference is too great when placed on the indoor ground, which affects the observation effect; the second step of

2 is to connect the network and the changes in seismic waves transmitted by the sensor probe will be transmitted to the analysis equipment and digital instruments placed inside the center platform, and the vibration wave analysis can be performed at any time.

Since the center platform is located next to Majiagou, it is planned in a unified manner according to the architectural characteristics of Harbin City. The center platform is designed in European style. There is a beautiful dome on the roof. The dome material is glass fiber reinforced plastic (GFRP), and the surface is sprayed with blue and black real stone paint.

2 Harbin’s current earthquake monitoring outlet density is not enough

Harbin is a national key earthquake monitoring and defense zone. Before the construction of the Harbin Earthquake Observation Center Station, the number of all monitoring station items in Harbin was only 1/3 of the basic requirements of the national key surveillance and defense zone “4-5 earthquake observation stations per 10,000 square kilometers”. The density of earthquake monitoring outlets is insufficient, and the amount of information about earthquake precursors is small, which causes difficulties in emergency response and earthquake forecasting. Especially for densely populated urban areas, Harbin City currently has no precursor observation methods.

Data provided by the Harbin earthquake monitoring department shows that:

Currently, there are only 5 manned earthquake observation stations, 3 unmanned telemetry earthquake stations, and 5 earthquake precursor monitoring points. They can only monitor seismic activities and do not have corresponding analysis and forecasting capabilities and earthquake early warning capabilities.

"From the overall consideration of earthquake monitoring in Harbin, the municipal government scientifically plans to rationally build the Harbin Earthquake Observation Center Station. This central station can further enhance the ability of earthquake monitoring and monitoring in Harbin, so that our city can prevent and reduce disasters in advance," said staff from the Municipal Development and Reform Commission and the Municipal Earthquake Office.

3 can monitor seismic waves of magnitude 2.0 or above

After the Harbin Earthquake Observation Center is put into use, the actual monitoring capacity of the Harbin earthquake monitoring station network can reach M≥2.0 (Note: it can monitor seismic waves of magnitude 2.0 or above), and the local area can reach M≥1.0. The initial positioning time for earthquakes occurring in the jurisdiction and surrounding 50 kilometers shall not exceed 5 minutes, and the precise positioning time shall not exceed 10 minutes. Previously, our city's actual earthquake monitoring capacity only reached magnitude 2.5 or above, and some areas were magnitude 1.5 or above. The newly built Harbin Earthquake Observation Center further improves the actual monitoring capabilities of Harbin Earthquake Monitoring Station.

There is no need to worry too much about earthquakes. Harbin is a region with fewer and weaker earthquakes in my country. Data provided by the Municipal Earthquake Office shows that

Harbin City has an average of 10 small earthquakes with an average of magnitude greater than 1.0 in the annual district, with the largest magnitude of magnitude 3.0 in recent years. The largest earthquake last year's magnitude was 2.2, and it occurred in Tonghe . The largest earthquake in Harbin in history occurred more than 1,700 years ago, with a magnitude of 7.5.
