Taipei Palace Museum has the North Courtyard and the South Courtyard. The South Courtyard is newly built. During the preparation period, it was predicted that it will become the "largest mosquito museum"'. As expected, since the South Courtyard opened in 2015, the number of visitors has been poor, and it has really been staged that "mosquitoes are more than tourists."
Due to the deterioration of cross-strait relations, the number of visitors has decreased significantly. Since 2018, the total number of visitors of the Taipei Palace Museum North and South Hospitals has less than 5 million; after 2020, it has been hit by the new crown epidemic, with a total of less than 2 million.
According to statistics from the Palace Museum in Taipei, the number of visitors to the cultural relics exhibition hall in 2020 was 642,163 in the North Courtyard and only 448,871 in the South Courtyard.
Why did the South Courtyard of the Forbidden City in Taipei decline so far?
1. Inappropriate site selection
South Courtyard was built in Chiayi County, southern Taiwan, China. The address is relatively remote. For political considerations ( Chiayi is the base camp of the Cai Party ) . In the end, the South Courtyard became: a museum with "no village in front and no shop in the back".
2. Unclear positioning is accompanied by political struggle
At the beginning of the planning of the South Court, there has always been unclear positioning: is it Asian art culture or Chinese art culture, and this is actually accompanied by political struggle.
Asian culture or Chinese civilization?
One side wants to spend huge sums of money to buy Asian cultural relics, while the other side believes that "the Forbidden City should be based on Chinese civilization."

In 2009, the South Courtyard was once rebuilt into a flower culture museum with flowers as the theme, and then it was changed back to the positioning of the Art and Culture Museum.
3. Improper operation
After the trial operation of the museum opened in 2015, there was a ridiculous incident of [a bowl of beef noodles in the restaurant in the museum priced at 500 yuan], which was strongly questioned by the outside world. At the same time, the cultural and creative facilities, parking lots, shuttle buses, tourist centers and other facilities provided by the South Courtyard have also been delayed and rectified many times.
