According to the resolution approved by the 76th General Assembly of in 2021, the establishment of the International Year of Basic Science aims to improve the global understanding of the importance of basic science and attach importance to the value and contribution of basic science to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals . Governments and academic circles around the world will hold various activities on continents around the world from July 2022 to June 2023.

2022, the Chinese Academy of Sciences held an exhibition of achievements at the UNESCO headquarters, displaying seven achievements including " Synthetic Biology Research", "Two Qinghai-Tibet Scientific Expo", " Sustainable Development Big Data International Research Center ", "500-meter Diameter Spherical Radio Telescope (i.e., "Chinese Sky Eye", FAST), "Desert Governance", "Artificial Photosynthesis", and "geological research supports mineral resource exploration and major engineering construction". In addition, "Fusion Energy Research" will be displayed at UNESCO for one month as a representative achievement of China along with the achievements of other countries.
