She is also weak and sick and always accompanied by illness throughout her life. She suffered from femoral tuberculosis at the age of 17, leaving behind a lifelong disability. He had nephrectomy at the age of 38 and suffered from breast cancer at the age of 46.
But she never bowed her head and surrendered. After three years of college entrance examination test, she finally became a generation of scientists. With her thin and strong body, she supported the theoretical research of semiconductor physics and surface physics in my country.
She is the "mother of Chinese semiconductors", Xie Xide.
At the same time, she is also the first female principal in New China and the only female principal in Fudan University .
Xie Xide was born in 1921 in a scholarly family in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. His father was physicist Xie Yuming . When Xie Yuming was studying in the United States, he was praised by Yang Zhenning as a "passing by the Nobel Prize" by because he accurately measured the structure of the hydrogen atom spectrum.
In Xie Xide's memory, her favorite place was her father's study. She likes to read the books in her father's bookcase, no matter whether she can understand them or not.
Over time, she is more familiar with the books in her father's bookcase. Once, her father was on a business trip and received a telegram at home. At that time, the Telegraph Bureau did not have the service of translating the telegram codes and needed the applicant to translate it himself, so the family had a book for the telegram code to check the characters.
Because of anxiety, my grandmother couldn't find the telegram book for a while. At this time, Xie Xide rushed into his father's study and easily found the book and helped translate the telegram. "Achievements" like
made Xie Xide fall in love with reading and studying even more.
After entering primary school, Xie Xide became a veritable primary school master and became the first in the grade in the exam.
1937, affected by the Lugou Bridge Incident, the iron hooves of the Japanese invading army trampled on North China, and Xie Xide's family went south with his father to escape to Guiyang.
Not long after, 17-year-old Xie Xide suffered from femoral tuberculosis, and at this time she had just been admitted to the Hong Kong Physics Department of Hunan University, but the torture of the illness forced her to drop out of school.
What made her even more sad was that the doctor told her that there was no special medicine at the current medical level, and all she could do was go home to recuperate.
This is like sending Xie Xide "death penalty".
But she did not give up on her struggle and never put down her books.
She said to her mother: "Reading is my greatest interest. Only reading can make me forget my illness and enrich my life. Reading is a good recipe for curing my illness."
After 4 years of rest, she stood up with her tenacious perseverance and was admitted to the Department of Physics of Xiamen University by self-study.
1946, Xie Xide graduated from university. His father insisted on letting his daughter study abroad and see a bigger world. Xie Xide took the exam to study in the United States, but she did not pass the public funding exam, but could only study abroad at her own expense.
However, the financial situation at home at that time could not support her high tuition fees. In desperation, Xie Xide could only prepare for the second year's exam while working.
Fortunately, a year later, Xie Xide was admitted to the Smith Women's Arts and Science College in the United States and served as an assistant to the school, and tuition fees are exempted.
1949, Xie Xide, who studied for a master's degree in MIT , received an exciting news: New China is founded!
Xie Xide couldn't control his excitement, "I wish I could return to China immediately!"
But in 1950, the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea broke out, and soon, Qian Xuesen was under house arrest. The US government announced that all Chinese students studying science and engineering in the United States were not allowed to return to mainland China.
Xie Xide was very anxious, but there was no other way she could only wait for the opportunity.
During the two years of waiting, she obtained a doctorate in theoretical physics in MIT.
By 1952, Xie Xide could no longer wait. She and her lover Cao Tianqin discussed a strategy: Xie Xide first escaped from the United States, got married in the UK, and then returned home.
But as soon as Xie Xide walked onto the ship heading to the UK, the American police arrived. After cross-examination and inspection, they found that Xie Xide's luggage had to be released only if there were thousands of letters he had communicated with Cao Tianqin.
After returning to her motherland, she came to the Department of Physics of Fudan University to teach. She has offered seven or eight basic courses in Fudan, including optics and theoretical mechanics. Whenever she became familiar with a course, she would give it to other teachers and open up new courses herself.
At the same time, she saw that the computer is still composed of electronic tubes, covering a particularly large area. So she was keenly aware that semiconductor science will change the future computer science, thereby changing her research direction, and devote herself to the research of semiconductor physics .
1956, the country will establish its own semiconductor talent reserve and hope that Xie Xide can go to Beijing to serve as deputy director to preside over the work.
But at that time, her son was just born, and just when everyone thought she would resign, she did not hesitate and simply packed the package and went to Beijing.
2 years later, "Semiconductor Physics" co-edited by her and Huang Kun was released, setting a precedent in the semiconductor field in my country. For a long time since then, this book has become a must-read standard textbook and basic reference book for Chinese semiconductor physics professionals.
At the same time, the first single crystal silicon, the first semiconductor material and the first transistor were also born with her efforts.
In addition, through her efforts, the five schools jointly trained the first batch of more than 200 semiconductor graduates in my country, laying a solid foundation for the development of my country's semiconductor industry.
Since then, many universities across the country have imitated the establishment of semiconductor majors, established research institutes and workshops for the production of semiconductor materials and devices.
Long-term high-intensity work made Xie Xide's body sometimes unable to bear it. Once, she suddenly fainted during the experiment. Later, everyone learned that she had worked for nearly a year with severe kidney stones and heart disease.
After the operation, she stood on the podium again. But the good times did not last long. In the special era, she was involved in sports. She lived in a cowshed, worked hard labor, and swept the toilet, all of which were dirty and tiring work.
Later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer under such circumstances.
Although the disease did not treat her preferentially, she never gave up on herself.
In her thin body, there is huge energy.
In 1983, Xie Xide served as the president of Fudan University and became the first female principal of a university in New China.
As the principal, she has a long-term and sharp vision. She resisted the opposition and took the lead in breaking the Soviet model of comprehensive universities with only liberal arts and science in China, and added several colleges such as the School of Technology Science, School of Economics, School of Management, etc., turning Fudan into a comprehensive university with humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences and management sciences.
She also opened the Surface Physics, which was just born internationally at that time, and also established the American Studies Center of Fudan University to promote Chinese students to understand the United States.
In order to allow more students to go out, Xie Xide insists on writing recommendation letters to students in the world's universities in his spare time. As long as she is recognized by Xie Xide, she will write a long letter of recommendation whether she is a student at the school or not.
Moreover, Xie Xide hates all the same and unfounded empty words, and every recommendation letter is written truthfully and comprehensively.
"Although this takes a lot of my time, it is a pleasure for me."
Another time, a student just came back from studying in Germany and wanted to carry out some scientific research projects, but he was struggling with no fund support. He asked his mentor Xie Xide to write a letter of recommendation.
But at that time, Xie Xide's husband had just passed away. He originally wanted to find other teachers to write a recommendation letter. What he didn't expect was that on the second day of the memorial service, Xie Xide delivered the recommendation letter she wrote to the students.
students were very sorry, "Actually, let me draft the letter myself, you can just review and sign a name." Xie Xide said, "I will write it myself, which will be more helpful to you."
During her tenure as president, Fudan University participated in international academic exchanges more than 600 times. Foreign media reporters called her "China's President of Harvard University."
By the time of old age, her cancer cells metastasized to the chest wall and lymph nodes several times. Her chest cavity was severely hydrated, and nearly 20,000 ml of effusion was extracted 29 times, which was equivalent to the capacity of 40 salt water bottles. In the late stage, she had to insert several tubes, inhaling oxygen, nasal feeding, blood transfusion, catheterization, and a heart monitor. Because of her legs disabled, she was forced to sit in bed and could not go to the right, which made her very painful.
Xie Xide was very strong and never hummed.
When she was still able to speak, she said to every medical staff who helped her: "Thank you". Even though the cannula reached her throat and could no longer speak, she gently pinched the medical staff's hand to express her gratitude.
said, "We have never seen such a graceful patient."
During her hospitalization, her only request was to have a phone call to get her to connect to the computer. Because of her legs that are too fast to bend, she can only work while standing. I send a lot of emails every day and deal with a lot of things. It was not until acute heart failure and respiratory failure occurred, and after rescue, I could no longer stand up and had to stop working.
A doctor in charge of her treatment said: "After she had nearly 10 heart failures, the doctor inserted a snorkel into her during rescue. After she woke up, she wanted to remove the intubation and wrote the word 'dea' on my hand. She wanted to say what she thought in the last time. I explained to her that according to the current situation, the ventilator cannot be taken, and only one of them may be to cut the trachea from the neck. Unexpectedly, she agreed immediately."
March 4, 2000, Xie Xide passed away at Shanghai East China Hospital. In her will, she wrote: "Donate my body to China's medical cause."
That night, thousands of paper cranes that students spontaneously folded were hung on the branches, stretching from Building 9 of the Fudan Physics Department Student Door to the First Teaching Building.
Many people remember that at the last Teachers' Day party that Xie Xide attended before his death, Xie Xide and several famous scientists stood side by side on the wide stage, with representatives of teachers and young students sitting in the audience.
When the host asked her, "In the 1950s, what force made you break through the many obstacles, resolutely return to China, and devote yourself to the cause of socialist construction?"
Xie Xide said word by word: "I, love, China!"
