Fu Jen Middle School was founded in the autumn of 1918. Mr. Tang Jiyun from the Shanghai St. John's University Wuxi Alumni Association put forward the school's proposal and raised 4,000 yuan from the alumni association as the founding funding. The name of the school is "Private Fu Jen Middle School". The word "Fu Ren" is taken from "The Analects of Confucius·Yan Yuan", "A gentleman uses literature to make friends, and friends to help benevolence."
The school started on September 14, 1918. Mr. Mo Gaowen (American), president of the Catholic Wuxi Anglican Church, was hired as the first principal. Mr. Bu Fangji (American), President of Shanghai St. John's University, made a special trip to Xi'an to attend the opening ceremony.

In 1952, the private Fu Jen Middle School was taken over by the state and renamed "Wuxi No. 2 Middle School". In 1959, the city’s No. 2 Middle School ranked first in the city’s unified cultural examination. In 1960, the Municipal Education Bureau held an on-site meeting and proposed to the city the slogan of "learn from the second middle school and surpass the second middle school". In November 1979, with the approval of the relevant provincial and municipal departments, it was decided that the "No. 2 Middle School" and "Donglin Primary School" were merged and renamed "Donglin School" until they were separated in 1982. In 1982, the city's No. 2 Middle School was identified as a provincial key middle school.
In 1983, the school entered a new stage of development. A modern middle school with complete facilities and novel architectural style has emerged at the southern end of Qinyuan Community, on the east bank of the ancient canal.
