Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the highest academic title in science and technology established by the People's Republic of China. It is a lifelong honor and is the most outstanding scientific elite and academic authoritative group in mainland China. It was originally called " Member of the Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Sciences". It was changed to its current name in October 1993. In 1994, it began to select additional foreign academicians.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences elects additional academicians every two years. The following is an introduction to the past and present of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

(2) Faculty members over the years
In 1955, the first batch of faculty members was 233 people. Among them, there are 61 members of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences; 172 members of the Science and Technology Committee. Two years later, 18 more members were hired, reaching 190.
From 1979 to 1981, the selection of additional academic members was carried out, with a total of 283 new academic members, bringing the total number of academic members to 400.
From 1990 to 1991, 210 new faculty members were elected by voting, including 38 members from the Department of Mathematics and Science, 35 from the Department of Chemistry, 34 from the Department of Biology, 35 from the Department of Earth Sciences, and 68 from the Department of Technology and Science. The total number of academic members reaches 528.

In 1993, 59 members were elected to the faculty, including 10 from the Department of Mathematics and Physics, 10 from the Department of Chemistry, 11 from the Department of Biology, 10 from the Department of Earth Sciences, and 18 from the Department of Technical Sciences.
(3) Additional election of academicians
As of the end of December 2015, a total of 1,306 scholars and experts from various departments and regions across the country (including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) have been elected as academicians (faculty members) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; 100 foreign academicians have been elected.
According to the official website of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in September 2018, there are 790 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Among them, there are 152 people in the Department of Mathematical Physics, 127 people in the Department of Chemistry, 150 people in the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine, 129 people in the Department of Earth Sciences, 94 people in the Department of Information Technology and Science, and 138 people in the Department of Technology and Science. There are also 91 foreign academicians.

The number of members of the first batch of academic departments is 3.6 times that of the former academicians of Academia Sinica . Most of these academic members have played a very important role in various fields of science and technology in China. It can be said that they are the founders of modern China's science and technology industry.
In 1994, the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences were renamed as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which determined that the scale of Chinese academicians was larger and the number of new members was larger, which would inevitably lower the academic qualification standards of academicians.

From academic member to academician, a change of title not only means the final return of honor, but also marks the inseparable history of scientists and the development of national science and technology sharing the same fate.

Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have high levels and great influence. Among them are well-known academicians such as Zhong Nanshan, Tu Youyou, and Li Lanjuan, whom we are familiar with. They are the gathering of pillars of our country, important pillars of China’s development and take-off, and treasures of the country!
