When night falls, every architect may have a dialogue with the city, tell the story of the city, and continue the progress and development of the city.

Beijing’s style is constantly changing

Beijing News: You are one of the first batch of Taiwanese designers to enter the mainland. What are the similarities and differences in the style and focus of luxury house design on both sides of the Taiwan Strait?

Li Weimin: Relatively speaking, Taiwan has relatively high homogeneity in design due to its relatively small social scale. After a period of time, the mainstream culture will reach a consensus and the design will be more delicate and restrained. The diversity and differences between the north and the south of the continent are huge. Market demand is also a factor that causes great differences in design in mainland China. Take Beijing as an example. It is a rapidly developing city, and its beauty and value have not been condensed by the times, so this kind of diversified but not diversified market phenomenon appears.

Beijing News: When designing for a Beijing project, do you have any considerations based on local conditions?

Li Weimin: We are more concerned about Beijing’s geographical environment, and we will make certain adjustments based on Beijing’s location, climate and other factors. Beijing’s style is also constantly developing and changing. If we must define a positioning for Beijing’s luxury houses, I think the words that really fit the spirit of this city are diversity and mix and match. We must consider how to maintain a balance between the old and the new, tradition and modernity.

Every style is worthy of pride

Beijing News: What do you think of the different styles of architecture?

Li Weimin: Any style exists for its own reason. In my opinion, every style has something to be proud of and has its own cultural importance. Many things in history are not necessarily suitable for modern people's lifestyles, such as baroque style . I personally like the Renaissance and Baroque, but it is a pity that this kind of thing is now only regarded as a symbol of wealth rather than a symbol of life and culture. given to the building.

Beijing News: There are currently many projects using the new Chinese style. Why is this design style becoming popular today? In your opinion, what are the characteristics, pros and cons of this design style?

Li Weimin: The Zen style emphasized in New Chinese Style is more consistent with the values in our culture. Today, we condense this Eastern philosophical thinking to reconstruct the lifestyle that was forgotten due to historical reasons in the past. Therefore, the new Chinese style design still has very positive results. It allows people to re-search for their historical roots, find their favorite spaces and forms in these roots, and reconstruct their lives.

Xiamen Ganges Qishang High-rise Apartment, works by Li Weimin

Beijing News: In recent years, have the concepts of the design world changed significantly?

Li Weimin: There are very big changes in . The real architectural design of the previous generation can be traced back to the era of Liang Sicheng . Nowadays, when the social economy changes, both the market and architectural designers are working hard to integrate with the world's most cutting-edge lifestyles and make up for the lack of design concepts caused by historical faults. There will definitely be a development process in between.

Ten years ago, it was the first time for most people to buy a house. At that time, people did not understand what a good house was, and customers blindly followed foreign styles and had no design concepts. But now the Chinese have seen the world and have a better understanding of life concepts. In today's Beijing market, customers have very strict quality requirements for first-tier luxury homes. Good works need to exceed the limits of division of labor

Beijing News: Most luxury products are given huge spaces. What principles do you think luxury products should follow in terms of space design?

Li Weimin: Our principle is to improve space utilization and make spaciousness become calm instead of letting spaciousness become empty waste. In actual design projects, space is never big enough compared to dreams.

We can only try to make the space as spacious and calm as possible by making full use of the space - such as minimizing aisles and making full use of aisle space. In addition, you can also combine indoor space with outdoor space to make the space as layered as possible. In fact, in space design, hollowness does not mean that it will increase the sense of space. Sometimes a corner can give people more space for imagination than a large room that is transparent at a glance.

Heyi Tainan Xintiandi, Li Weimin’s work

Beijing News: In a successful work, what roles should architectural design and interior design play?

Li Weimin: architectural design and development is a team project, which also includes developers, planning, sales and designers. Whether you are an architectural designer or an interior designer, you need to exceed the limitations of these divisions of labor during the design process in order to create a good work.

In my opinion, architectural design and interior design should be inseparable. Throughout the design process, the connection between architectural design and interior design has always been our focus. In many cases, the first thing we consider is the relationship between windows and indoor space, rather than the relationship between windows and the appearance of the building. The advantage of this design method is that it can seamlessly connect the building and the interior space, but the disadvantage is that it is difficult to make the appearance of the building very flamboyant.

Improve people’s lifestyles through products

Beijing News: What is considered a good design, catering to customers or adhering to concepts and striving for innovation?

Li Weimin: we are a service industry, we create homes for people. However, like all customized services on the market, the customization of high-end products also requires making choices within the scope allowed by the corporate culture and corporate style behind these products. We will adhere to some of our basic principles and will not just do it to please To please guests, we must find ways to enhance people's lifestyles through profound and rigorous products. high-end residential should include the most mature cutting-edge products and the most humane life concepts, so we must also find a balance between the customer's requirements and our understanding of architecture when designing.

Beijing News: How should we resolve the conflict between our own design concepts and those of our clients during actual design work?

Li Weimin: We also have our own professional bottom line in . Regulations and safety are definitely unbreakable. If we can't do it, we can only reject it categorically. However, many of our customers are long-term customers. Through long-term communication, we can also convey our professional opinions and have an impact on them.

Chongqing Nanquan , Li Weimin’s works

Beijing News: What is the most proud work in your design career? What features of this work satisfy you?

Li Weimin: From the perspective of the Beijing market, the one that impressed me most was the Kunlun Apartment. At that time, there were no real high-end residences in Beijing. Before the design, there were no modern-style products on the Beijing market. There was an opportunity to present a modern style to the Beijing market, which could affect many people's lifestyles and make people feel comfortable. Understanding that modern design can also be endowed with sufficient value attributes, I think this is the greatest significance of this project.

On the other hand, I feel that the communication and cooperation with the developer are equally impressive. The developer of this case is Mr. Ren Zhiqiang. He has a strong subjective will and respects my professionalism very much. In every communication meeting, he would ask my team to fully express their professional opinions. Obviously, a developer who can integrate professional opinions will bring better and more scientific projects to this market.
