Changzhou has a strong badminton atmosphere and many years of experience in hosting tournaments. Since 2008, Changzhou has hosted the China Badminton Masters for ten consecutive years. In 2018, it won the right to host the 2018-2021 China Open of the Badminton World Tour. However, due to the global epidemic, the 2020-2021 China Badminton Open was suspended. This time, Changzhou has won the right to host the China Badminton Open from 2023 to 2026, demonstrating Changzhou's determination to build this event into a high-quality event and a brand event.

According to the new cycle calendar arrangement of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the China Open, the All England Open, the Indonesia Open, and the Malaysian Open are both Super 1000 events. This is also the highest level event on the tour. In the league competition system, it is second only to top events such as the Olympic Games and World Championships.

The continuous holding of high-level events has promoted the vigorous development of badminton in Changzhou. Data from the Changzhou Municipal Sports Bureau shows that in 2008, Changzhou had no more than 100 standard badminton courts, and only a few thousand people often walked into the venues to play badminton. Today, the city has more than 1,100 standard badminton courts, nearly 80 regular badminton clubs, and amateur badminton clubs. There are more than 60,000 enthusiasts. In 2019, nearly 30,000 people attended the China Open, 62% of whom were local viewers and 38% were from outside the city. The competition directly drove consumption of nearly 50 million yuan and indirectly drove consumption of about 150 million yuan.
