The Battle of Golden Gate, a miserable defeat in the War of Liberation, why did more than nine thousand people be wiped out?

Liberation War When our People's Army fought with the Kuomintang army, it was like cutting tofu with a sharp knife and smashing the Kuomintang army without any scum. But by the time of the Golden Gate Battle , more than 9,000 people of the People’s Liberation Army landed on the island but the entire army was wiped out. Almost none survived. What is the reason? Today, let’s talk about the worst failure in the process of the War of Liberation-the Battle of Golden Gate!

▲War of Liberation

Let’s take a look at the prerequisites when the Battle of Kinmen broke out. On October 24, 1949, we and the People’s Liberation Army launched the Battle of Kinmen. Before this, the People's Liberation Army had captured Dadeng Island and Xiaodeng Island, and several small islands north of Kinmen had been occupied by our army. On October 17th, we captured Xiamen again. At this time, Kinmen Island was simply at hand for the volunteers.

As long as the Golden Gate can be liberated, then the entire Taiwan will be fully exposed, so the significance of this battle is very significant. In this battle, the superiors gave command to the 28th Army.

The 28th Army belongs to the 10th Span1span Corps , and the commander of the Corps is Ye Fei. Of course, we are not saying that the combat effectiveness of the 28th Army is low or how. It was only because the 28th Army at that time was unable to take on the responsibility of command.

There are three divisions in the 28th Army, namely 82, 83 and 84. The 82nd Division stayed in Fuzhou. Some troops of the 83rd Division had already moved south with the large forces, while part of the 84th Division remained in northern Fujian to suppress bandits.

▲The People's Liberation Army grabs a beach

It can be seen from this that the 28th Army was very scattered. In addition, there is another very important reason. The main leaders of the 28th Army are not on the front lines at all.

is like the military commander Zhu Shaoqing, who has been treated in the hospital for health reasons. The chief of staff was temporarily transferred before the troops entered Fuzhou because of some issues, and the political commissar Chen Meizao was in charge of the military issues throughout Fujian.

Therefore, the 28th Army not only has uneven personnel, but also has no "actual commander of the Battle of Kinmen." After thinking twice, the 28th Army Headquarters handed over the command of the front line to Xiao Feng, the deputy commander.

On the issue of command authority, there were already problems in the early stages of the war. After the campaign was launched, the issue of command authority became even greater. Because only 300 ships were made up at the time, the number of soldiers transported was very limited. In order to transport all the troops (6 regiments) to the past 28 army, it was decided to transport them in batches.

▲Ready to go

However, when transporting the first batch of more than 8,000 fighters, the firepower of the beach was considered. Therefore, the first batch of transported personnel were all front-line combatants, and there were no high-level commanders to follow.

However, after more than 8,000 fighters successfully landed on the beach, the 300 ships they were on were quickly destroyed by enemy fire. So the second batch of registered personnel lost their vehicles for grabbing the beach. What does it mean? These PLA units fighting the Kuomintang troops on Kinmen Island did not even have a senior commander.

How important is the relationship between the victory and defeat of a war and the commander? Everyone knows how to fight a war without a commander? This was one of the main reasons for the failure of the Battle of Golden Gate.

Next, let’s look at the second reason-insufficient knowledge of the enemy's investigation. Land investigation has always been our PLA's expertise. There is no enemy situation that cannot be detected, but how should we detect it across the sea?

▲Landing operations

The People’s Liberation Army once sent a special ship close to Kinmen Island, but it was quickly discovered by the enemy. Therefore, the volunteers can only use binoculars to detect the enemy. This method is definitely not accurate.

At that time, the information our People's Liberation Army got was that of the National Army stationed on Kinmen Island. There were only more than 20,000 soldiers in the Li Liangrong Corps. In addition, there are some remnants and defeated generals who have fled from the Xiamen battlefield. The PLA's 6 regiments are absolutely sufficient to attack such regiments.

And the only variable is Hu Lian Corps, Hu Lian Corps is stationed very close to Kinmen. Moreover, the troops are strong and upright, and their combat effectiveness is high. Hu Lian is also one of the best in the Kuomintang. Whether he participates in the war will directly affect the outcome of the war.

However, a KMT telegram intercepted by the intelligence department of our People's Liberation Army showed that Hu Lian was unwilling to support Kinmen. His purpose was to withdraw to Taiwan.

▲KMT soldiers

Regardless of Hu Lian's attitude, just in case, the reconnaissance troops conducted investigations on the Hu Lian regiment. It is determined that the Hu Lian Corps has evacuated to the sea. Although it is impossible to determine the next move of the Hu Lian Corps, the 28th Army judges that the Hu Lian Corps did not reinforce Kinmen Island, but is preparing to retreat to Taiwan based on some enemy conditions detected.

So what is the real situation? The Hu Lian Corps did leave a portion of its troops to float on the sea, but this was just a "blindness". The vast majority of its troops have been ordered to enter Kinmen Island.

At this time, there are as many as 6 divisions of the Kuomintang troops stationed on Kinmen Island, but our offensive troops have only 6 regiments. These 6 regiments still landed on the island in two batches (the second batch failed to land on the island).

Even if our People's Liberation Army can fight again, this huge gap in numbers is hard to make up, and we are still facing the most vicious Hu Lian regiment in the Kuomintang.

▲The PLA fighters

There was a major problem with the command power, and the control of the enemy's situation was not in place. The battle of Jinmen has been doomed to fail. After the battle began, bad news began to spread overwhelmingly, and the deputy commander Xiao Feng was once in a hurry to faint at the headquarters.

After the situation was reported to General Span1span Ye Fei General Ye Fei decisively gave instructions to support Jinmen even if there was only a glimmer of hope, but at this time it was difficult to find the ship.

exhausted all the means, and only found a limited number of ships, and these ships can only transport 4 companies of troops, judging from the war situation on Kinmen Island, let alone 4 companies even if they transport 4 divisions. May not be able to win.

When the soldiers of the four companies arrived at Kinmen Island, everything in front of them made them very desperate. The corpses on the island were everywhere, and the first batch of People's Liberation Army landed only controlled three villages.

▲Boarding

However, the People's Liberation Army on the island saw that there were only 4 reinforcements and they were silent. The meaning is very obvious. It is impossible to have reinforcements. Everyone has to fight until they die. . Since you are going to die, let's fight to death! As a result, the war quickly heated up, and street fighting became the main theme of the battlefield.

By the day of October 26, gunshots on Kinmen Island have become very scattered, and the results of the war have become very obvious. The more than 9,000 fighters barely survived, and most of the more than 300 boat workers died in the sea.

▲Battle of the beach

According to the KMT’s statistics, except for the 3,000 captured, all the other PLA troops died. In fact, looking at the entire battle of Kinmen Island, we lost a mess, mainly because of two words: underestimate the enemy!

The command was arranged very hastily, sending troops in a hurry before the enemy's strength was ascertained. If it were not for underestimating the enemy, I believe it would not have been defeated so thoroughly. Fortunately, the subsequent war also learned from this defeat.
