This is a small highland that can’t be more common. There is a small village with more than a dozen families in the depression behind the highland. But right here, the world-famous Shangganling battle took place. In this battle A lonely hero emerged from it-Hu Xiudao.

Hu Xiudao
Hu Xiudao was born in Jintang County, Sichuan Province in 1931. He lost his father when he was only a few years old. He had to give cattle to the landlord. At the age of 15, he was arrested and worked hard. He witnessed the Americans destroying large tracts of farmland. When the war of the invaders hit the Yalu River, the 19-year-old Hu Xiudao joined the Chinese People’s Volunteers. In June 1951, he became a volunteer. A small soldier of the 5th Company of the 91st Regiment, 31st Division, 12th Corps. When
first arrived in North Korea, Hu Xiudao's troops opened mountains and roads in the back of North Korea. Every day, the instructor would ask cultural instructors to read newspapers to the soldiers. The most exciting thing in the newspaper is the story of the hero on the front line. Hu Xiudao is often fascinated by it. Once, a Miao hero named Liu Xingwen came to give a report. Hu Xiudao sat in the big pine forest on the hillside early and waited. . He guessed that Liu Xingwen must be a man with big arms and a round waist. Who knew that Liu Xingwen was about the same age as himself, and his face was childish. But it was such an ordinary young man who defeated the enemy 11 times on Park Dabong. While shocked, Hu Xiudao secretly established his ideal in his heart-to be an honorable and glorious Chinese, like many fighting heroes.
participated in the Battle of Shangganling
In October 1952, in order to get rid of the passive situation on the battlefield and in negotiations, the "United Nations Army" led by the United States concentrated its troops and firepower on the volunteer army since the fall of 1951. The largest "Golden Offensive" in which the Ganling area is the main offensive target is the so-called "showdown plan" by the commander of the 8th Army of the US Army invading North Korea.
The intensity of the battle of Shangganling is unprecedented, especially the artillery firepower density, which has exceeded the highest level of World War II. Among them, the most intense and concentrated firepower of the US military is the 597.9 and 537.7 highlands on the front of the Five Holy Mountains.
In order to compete for these two highlands, the Chinese People's Volunteers and the "United Nations Army" have fought fiercely again and again. The two sides continue to increase their military strength and the competition for the Shangganling position continues to escalate. The fierce artillery fire made the entire Shangganling Mountains covered by gunpowder smoke, and the light of the flare guns could not be seen 100 meters apart. Both sides had to use mortars to fire flare shells to communicate. The battle became more and more fierce. The position was gained and lost, and lost and recovered. It changed hands several times a day. Every time it changed hands, it was accompanied by ups and downs of shelling and dark fighting. There were corpses on the ground and blood stained the high ground...
1952 In November 2008, the Battle of Shangganling entered a decisive counterattack stage. The commanders of the US Eighth Army Van Fleet and Li Chengman launched the most violent offensive in the Battle of Shangganling. The focus of the attack was the 597.9 highland on the left side of Shangganling. Volunteers used the hilltops around 597.9 Heights to build 12 positions. Under the leadership of squad leader Li Feng, Hu Xiudao's 5th company and 2 squadrons and 3 new fighters, Teng Tusheng, were ordered to stick to position 3 on 597.9 Heights.
young hero, first on the battlefield
This is the first time Hu Xiudao fought with the enemy with live ammunition. After a burst of earth-shaking platoons, the enemy began to climb up, getting closer and closer to the position. Hu Xiudao couldn't see how many enemies were coming, so he clutched the blasting tube tightly. After hearing the squad leader yell "fire the cannon", Hu Xiudao tried his best to throw the blasting tube out, and then desperately tossed the blasting tube, threw grenade, and grenades. When he was about to swing out again, his hand was grabbed by squad leader Li Feng, and Hu Xiudao realized that the enemy who had climbed up had already been repulsed.
"Until the squad leader grabbed my wrist, I didn't know that the enemy had been beaten back." Hu Xiudao said wittily, "For many years, I have been very regretful that I wasted so much precious ammunition ."—— At that time, the supply of volunteers was difficult, and ammunition was often more precious than life.
Soon, the enemy launched a second attack under the cover of artillery fire. This time, Hu Xiudao and the squad leader focused their fire on both sides of the scattered enemy group, forcing the enemy to squeeze in the middle, and then slammed forward for a while, so that the enemy in front could not get up, and the squad leader rushed forward to wait for the enemies to squeeze together. , Suddenly dropped a grenade at the enemy group. This method known as "making dumplings" really worked, and the enemy lost their helmets and armor and fled for their lives. Under the leadership of the old squad leader, Hu Xiudao and Teng Tusheng both turned from new recruits to "veterans" after repelling the enemy's two charges. When the troops of the two platoons of South Korea rushed up again, this time, Hu Xiudao bolded. When the enemy got very close, Teng Tusheng supplied ammunition. He and the squad leader led the enemy while the other stopped the enemy. Roll down, scurrying around holding his head. Under the command of squad leader Li Feng, three consecutive hours of fierce battle repelled the enemy's more than 10 attacks on position 3.
At this time, the battle on positions 9 and 10 became more and more intense. Li Feng received instructions to go to position 9 for assistance. As soon as the squad leader left, only Hu Xiudao and Teng Tusheng were left at position 3. They hurriedly prepared ammunition between battles, and rows of uncovered grenades were placed beside them, ready to hit the enemy's head at any time. As soon as the smoke on the ground dissipated, the enemy's heavy artillery began to bombard them. The explosion blasted against the air, mud and stones hit the body, but they didn't have time to pay attention to them, waiting for the enemy who was about to attack them. Hand grenades and automatic guns took turns, Hu Xiudao and Teng Tusheng repelled more than 10 consecutive attacks.
At this time, there was an urgent order from the company command post: "No. 10 position is gone, the enemy is attacking in a hurry!" Hu Xiudao looked at the side position, and a large swath of enemies crawled over in front of the No. 10 position. , If the 10th position is lost, the 597.9 heights will not be kept. Braving the enemy’s machine gun fire to blockade, he rolled from one crater to another, and then climbed forward from another crater, "rolling and climbing" and rushed upwards. At this time, platoon leader Guo Sandan passed from position 9 to support They, but as soon as they entered the hole, a shell fell on his side and exploded, and the platoon leader died. The comrade Teng Tusheng was sent off the line because of serious injuries. Only Hu Xiudao was left on the
position.
single-soldier combat, setting a record for destroying the enemy
At this time, the enemy's tanks kept climbing up, hundreds of artillery fired all at once, and planes were bombarding them. Subsequently, groups of enemy troops continued to surge upward. Hu Xiudao relied on the remaining ammunition and insisted on fighting alone. Hu Xiudao constantly attacked the enemy back and forth on the No. 3 and No. 10 heights. Grenades and grenades were thrown at the enemy one by one, and they continued to explode in the enemy group. Miraculously repelled dozens of enemy attacks.
At dusk, the enemy once again squeezed over the mountains and plains, and the surrounding positions simultaneously sounded the sound of killing. At the critical moment, the large army of volunteers arrived, the enemy was completely defeated, and the battle ended victoriously.
Hu Xiudao was the last man to stand firm, repelling the enemy 41 charges, and set a record of destroying more than 280 enemies in a single day. It cannot be said that this is a miracle in the history of war. In order to commend Hu Xiudao's heroic deeds, on January 15, 1953, the leadership of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army awarded him special merit, and on June 1, 1953, he was awarded the title of "First Class Fighting Hero". On June 25 of the same year, the Standing Committee of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea awarded him the title of “Hero of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”, as well as the “First Class National Flag Medal” and the “Gold Star Medal”.
After returning to China, Hu Xiudao served as a military commander in the Chinese People's Liberation Army for a long time, and was once the deputy chief of staff of a group army of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. He was elected as a representative of the Third National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China and a representative of the Ninth and Tenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China. After retiring, he often went to the grassroots company to make traditional education reports for officers and soldiers. He also served as the honorary principal or outside counselor of many primary and secondary schools, and was hired as the director of the Xuzhou City Care for the Next Generation Working Committee.
Hu Xiudao died in Nanjing in March 2002. "Shangganling has made extraordinary achievements, and his fame goes down in history; he has dedicated his life to the party and his demeanor has passed through the ages." This is the elegiac couplet of Comrade Hu Xiudao, and is also a portrayal of the life of an old hero.
