Shandong Gaotang belongs to Liaocheng City and has a very long history. During the Yao, Shun, Xia, and Shang eras, the world of Jiuzhou Gaotang belonged to the territory of Yanzhou. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States period, Gaotang belonged to the State of Qi. After Qin Shihuang destroyed the six kingdoms, the world was divided into 36 counties. (Later increased to more than 40 counties) Gaotang County belonged to the East County; when the Western Han Dynasty divided the counties and counties, Gaotang County was originally established and belonged to the Pingyuan County of the Qingzhou Provincial Government, but Gaotang belonged to Jizhou during the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Three Kingdoms period.
started from Gaotang’s establishment of the county in about 206 BC until the Five Dynasties. In more than a thousand years, Gaotang changed its name six times, so why did Gaotang change the county name frequently? It's all caused by the "Tang" character, and all of this must start with taboo.
The so-called taboo refers to the fact that when speaking and writing articles, the names of the monarch or relatives are not directly spoken or written, or simply omitted, or replaced by other words to show respect. Especially the name of the emperor needs to be taboo, sometimes even Not even the phonetic characters. Such examples are not uncommon in history. For example, Chang'e was originally called Heng'e, but it was changed to Chang'e because he wanted to avoid the Chinese emperor Liu Heng. For example, Li Shiji, a famous general in the early Tang Dynasty, changed his name to Li Ji, etc., several times in Gaotang history The reason for the name change is actually related to taboo.
The Han Dynasty, the Three Kingdoms, the Wei, Jin, the Southern and Northern Dynasties until Wu Zetian became emperor. Although Gaotang belonged to different prefectures and counties, the county name has never been changed. Wu Zetian usurped the world of Datang, so he was more sensitive to place names containing the word "Tang". In 693, Wu Zetian changed Gao Tang to Chongwu because he avoided the word "Tang". This was the first time Gao Tang changed his name. The name change is more of a taboo than a taboo.
In the first year of Shenlong (705), Wu Zetian's son, Tang Zhongzong Li Xian, ascended the throne, restored the title of Litang, and Chongwu changed back to Gaotang again. This is the second time Gaotang has been renamed.
In the fourth year of God Blessing (907), Zhu Wen forced Tang’s Ai Emperor Li Zong to retreat, the Tang Dynasty fell, Zhu Wen changed Yuan Kaiping’s establishment, and changed his name to Zhu Huang, Zhu Wen’s name change does not matter, but Gao Tang suffers In the disaster of Wuwang, Huang and Tang had the same rhyme, so in the second year of Kaiping (908), Zhu Wen changed Gaotang County to Yuqiu County . This is the third time Gaotang changed its name. This time the name change is actually a bit reluctant, even the finals are the same. To avoid taboo, Zhu Wen is too domineering.
In April 923, Li Cunxu proclaimed himself emperor in Weizhou and changed the name to the Later Tang Dynasty in Tongguang History. In October of the same year, after the death of the Later Liang, Yuqiu County was changed back to Gaotang County in the second year of Tongguang (924). This was Gaotang’s fourth name change.
In 936, when Shi Jingtan died, the Tang Dynasty was founded after the Jin Dynasty. Because "瑭" and "Tang" were homophonic, Gaotang County was renamed unexpectedly. This time it was changed to Qicheng County . Even the word "Jing" must be avoided. People surnamed Jing have no choice but to change the surname and change the word "敬" to Gou's and Wen's. This is Gaotang's fifth name change.
After the first year of Qianhu in the Han Dynasty (948), Qicheng County was changed back to Gaotang County again. This is the sixth and last time Gaotang has been renamed. Since then, the name of Gaotang has basically not changed. The county was promoted to a state, and Gaotang County was divided into Tangbei County and Tangnan County in the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941). In the autumn of the same year, it was merged into one and became Gaotang County. That is another matter. It is not uncommon for
to change names in many places in history because of taboos. However, it is quite rare that Shandong Gaotang County has changed its names six times because of a "Tang" word for taboos. It is quite rare to change four names one after another. I have to say that it was all caused by the "Tang" character.
