Xue Rengui (614-March 24, 683), whose name is Li and whose courtesy name is Rengui, was born in Xiu Village, Longmen County, Jiangzhou, Hedong Road (now Xiu Village, Hejin City, Shanxi Province). He was a sixth-generation grandson of Xue Andu, the King of Hedong of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and was a famous general in the early years of the Tang Dynasty.

When Emperor Gaozong of Tang , Xue Rengui was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Guazhou, General of the Right Army Guard, and Governor of the Procuratorate Daizhou, and was granted the title of Duke of Pingyang County. He has written fourteen volumes of "The New Notes on the Zhou Yi" and has been lost now. In 683, Xue Rengui died at the age of seventy. The book was awarded to the General of Zuo Xiaowei and the Governor of Youzhou .

So Emperor Taizong of Tang appointed Xue Rengui as the right-leading general to guard Xuanwu Gate.
