Anqing City was first built in the Southern Song Dynasty. In the tenth year of Jiading (1217), the prefect Huang Gan "city Anqing to prepare for war"; later due to war, Anqing Prefecture moved to Luoshazhou and Yangchazhou in the second year of Duanping (1235); and in the first year of Jingding (1260), the ambassador of the river, Ma Guangzu "rebuilds Yicheng into Xin'anqing Prefecture" (now Anqing City), and moved to Huaining County to manage the capital. Anqing, because it is located in a key place, has gradually become a place for common people's settlements, merchant markets, government stations and Buddhist meditation sites long before the city was established. According to historical records, there was a military city of Wankou City during the Three Kingdoms (Wu) period (2 14-237). During the Xianhe period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (327-334), Master Tong built Taiping Temple at the foot of Wansong Mountain (Taiping Temple Street is still available today). Southern Dynasty Liang Tianjian Fourth Year (505)Baozhi Monk Building Shishan Temple in Lushui Township (now the northern suburb). During the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty (58 1-600), Bodhi Temple was renamed Sanzu Temple (Sanzu Temple Street is still available today). In the eighth year of Xining (1075), Shuzhou Tong'an Supervisor was set up in Tong'an Bridge to cast copper coins. After the founding of Anqing City and until the end of the Qing Dynasty, it was the capital of Anqing Prefecture and Huaining County, and was the resident of a special office during the Republic of China period. The governors since the late Ming Dynasty also held peace and guarded here. From the 25th year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1760) to the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937), it was also the capital of Anhui Province. After the founding of New China, Anqing was established as a city alone, and it is the central city in southwest Anhui.
Anqing City was established in 1949 and was led by the Anqing Special Office. In 1951, Anqing City was directly under the jurisdiction of the Northern Anhui Administration. In 1952, Anqing City was directly under the jurisdiction of the province. In 1960, Anqing City entrusted the leaders of Anqing Special Office. In 1961, Anqing City was renamed directly under the provincial jurisdiction. In 1965, Anqing City was transferred to the leadership of Anqing Special Office. In 1979, Anqing City was renamed directly under the provincial jurisdiction. Anqing area has 8 counties under its jurisdiction. On August 17, 1988, the State Council approved: the Anqing area was abolished, and the Tongcheng County, Huaining County, Tongyang County, , Qianshan County, Taihu County, , Susong County, , Wangjiang County, , and Yuexi County were transferred to Anqing City. On August 20, 1996, the Ministry of Civil Affairs approved (Civil Affairs Approval No. [1996] No. 59) to abolish Tongcheng County and establish Tongcheng . It is under the custody of Anqing City. On May 13, 2005, the suburbs of Anqing City were renamed Yixiu District, Anqing City.
