Liu Bocheng is from Kaixian County, and Deng Xiaoping is from Guang'an. They are fellow Sichuan people, and they are both born in the year of Dragon, but Liu Bocheng is 12 years older. Both of them are one of the main founders of the People's Liberation Army of China and the founding fathers of the People's Republic of China . In 1932, Liu Bocheng came to the Central Soviet Area of ​​Jiangxi Province and served as the president and political commissar of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army University. He met Deng Xiaoping for the first time and left a good impression on each other. After the failure of the "anti-encirclement and suppression" campaign, the Central Red Army was forced to implement a strategic shift. Both Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping completed the 25,000-mile Long March , and both participated in the Zunyi Conference and expressed their attitudes clearly.

The real cooperation between the two began during the Anti-Japanese War and lasted for 13 years. The Anti-Japanese War broke out in full force. In 938, Deng Xiaoping went to Liao County, Shanxi Province to serve as the political commissar of the 129th Division according to the arrangement of the Central Military Commission. This was also recommended by Liu Bocheng. During the Anti-Japanese War, Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping made outstanding contributions. They commanded the troops to carry out night attacks on Yangmingbao, ambushes in Qigen Village, Changshengkou, Shentouling and Xiangtangpu, and led the anti-"Nineteenth Army" in southeastern Shanxi. A series of battles such as the "Road Siege", the Anti-Eleventh Road "mopping up" in southern Hebei, and the Zhengtai Yuliao Campaign established the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Anti-Japanese Base Area and firmly held the "South Gate" of the North China Anti-Japanese Base Area.

During the years of Taihang Mountain , Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping never complained, passed the buck, or argued with each other. They always had close trust and tacit cooperation. According to the memories of people who worked in the 129th Division, Liu Bocheng's mantra was "Do as Political Commissar Deng says," and Deng Xiaoping also often said, "Do as Master Liu says." Deng Xiaoping also tried his best to take care of the chores on himself, and only let Liu Bocheng make decisions on major matters, allowing Liu Bocheng to rest more and recuperate his body, which moved the guards very much. It is precisely because of the two people's sympathy, unity, and cooperation that the "Liu and Deng's Army" marched forward indomitably, continuously won victories, and frightened the enemy.

After the full-scale civil war broke out, In August 1947, Liu and Deng's armies marched thousands of miles into the Dabie Mountains. Under difficult conditions, they fought their way into the heart of the Kuomintang's rule, gained a foothold in the Dabie Mountains, opened up and expanded the Central Plains Liberated Area, and reversed the National war situation. Mao Zedong called the strategic offensive starting from the advance of Liu and Deng's armies into the Dabie Mountains the "historical turning point" of the Chinese revolution. In the Dabie Mountains, Liu and Deng were divided into two headquarters due to actual needs, but the telegrams reported and distributed were still signed with the word "Liu and Deng".

In November 1948, the General Front Committee composed of Liu Bocheng, Chen Yi, Deng Xiaoping, Su Yu, and Tan Zhenlin unified the command of the Huaihai Campaign, annihilating a total of 550,000 Kuomintang troops, which greatly accelerated the victory of the National Liberation War. From April to May 1949, Liu Bocheng, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yi, Su Yu and others commanded the cross-river battle to liberate Nanjing, Shanghai and the vast areas of East China. From October 1949 to 1950, Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping led their troops into the southwest and liberated Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and most of Xikang Province.

Deng Xiaoping, Zhang Jichun, Liu Bocheng and others were deployed in the battle together.

During the battle, Liu Bocheng was the decision-maker and was responsible for issuing orders, while Deng Xiaoping was responsible for political mobilization. The two had a clear division of labor and mutual trust, ensuring the smooth implementation of the decision. Liu Bocheng was an excellent military expert and military theorist, while Deng Xiaoping was a monk halfway through. He was good at learning and summarizing, and was called a "genius military strategist" by Liu Bocheng. Many people say that between Liu and Deng, even an code and could not be accommodated. Deng Xiaoping also once said: "People are accustomed to linking "Liu and Deng" together, and in our hearts, we also find it difficult to separate from each other. I feel very happy working with Bocheng and fighting together."

1950 , most of the country was liberated, the war was over, and New China was rejuvenated. The old partners, who had worked together for 13 years, had to separate and embark on a new journey in order to build New China. At that time, Liu Bocheng was going to Nanjing to prepare for the establishment of the National Military Academy, while Deng Xiaoping continued to stay in the southwest to lead the revolution and construction. Before leaving, Liu Bocheng gave Deng Xiaoping his collection of photos taken at the age of 22, when he was young. Deng Xiaoping regarded this photo as a treasure and kept it for a lifetime.

In October 1986, Marshal Liu Bocheng passed away, and Comrade Deng Xiaoping came to see him off.

During that special period, both Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping endured many hardships. Later, the central government corrected the chaos and Deng Xiaoping became the core of leadership again. He did not forget his old comrades and often came to Liu Bocheng's bedside. On October 7, 1986, Liu Bocheng passed away. Deng Xiaoping was the first to come to Liu Bocheng's mourning hall, and also brought his wife Zhuo Lin and his children and grandchildren, who were already like relatives. On October 16, Deng Xiaoping personally presided over Liu Bocheng's memorial meeting at the Great Hall of the People. Later, he wrote the article "Mourning for Bocheng" with tears in his eyes, lamenting the time when we fought side by side, which made people full of emotions.

The friendship between Liu Bocheng and Deng Xiaoping was established in the rain of bullets and hardships in the revolutionary years. They have experienced the vigorous revolution, the arduous War of Resistance Against Japan, and the ever-changing War of Liberation. Together with countless Chinese sons and daughters, they have invested in the construction of New China, and they have always been in the same boat through thick and thin, just like family.
