January 1981 was the most special month in Shen Zui's life, because at the age of 67, he was finally able to meet his wife and daughter, who had been separated for decades, in Hong Kong.

Everyone must have heard about Du Yuming, who once led the Kuomintang Fifth The Japanese Army's severely damaged the Japanese Fifth Division at Kunlun Pass. Later, he was captured by our army during the Battle of Huaihai during the War of Liberation. His son-in-law is the famous physicist Yang Zhenning.

According to common sense, a military commander and a combat unit rarely interact with each other, and it can be said that they do not know each other. So why did Du Yuming still hold Shen Zui's hand and say such things.

It turned out that the two of them underwent transformation together in the Merit Forest and formed a deep friendship.

Gongdelin is a special prison for reforming and detaining war criminals. Those detained are all military officials above the general level and civilian officials at the provincial governor level. It was here that the two people became attached.

Most people who first entered the Gongde Forest were in panic all day long, thinking that they were going to be interrogated and executed en masse.

After Du Yuming was captured, he was afraid of being insulted and tried to commit suicide, but failed.

He believed that he was the number one war criminal. Others might still have a way to survive in prison, but he had only one way to die. Instead of being humiliated, it was better to commit suicide.

But a long time ago, Premier Zhou gave these senior Kuomintang war criminals detailed instructions: "No one will be killed, but they will be released in batches, with freedom of movement and freedom of speech."

War criminals also have a rich life in Gongdelin. Their food expenses are one or two times more than those in other prisons, and they can also watch movies once a week. In addition to taking political and ideological classes every day,

also established more than a dozen groups such as shoe repair, laundry, and sewing. Du Yuming and Shen Zui joined the sewing group and served as group leader and deputy group leader respectively. The two often get together to talk about history, the past and present, learning, and the future. Deep friendships were established.

On December 4, 1959, Du Yuming was included in the first batch of amnesty list and was preparing to be released from prison. At this time, a full ten years had passed since he entered the Gongde Forest.

Du Yuming comforted: "You can't give up on yourself. Now that there is the first batch, there will definitely be a second batch and a third batch in the future. If you are not pardoned this time, then work hard to fight for it. Besides, you are not like me." , I have lived here for ten years, and you have only lived here for a few years."

The time came to 1960, one year after Du Yuming was pardoned. As the only senior military official, Shen Zui was pardoned by Chairman Mao.

Then, with the help of the People's Government, Shen Zui reunited with his little daughter who was still in mainland China.

Later, after many efforts, Shen Zui was able to take his young daughter to Hong Kong to visit relatives.

For Shen Zui, this trip to Hong Kong is to visit relatives, but in the eyes of the Kuomintang in Taiwan, this is a good opportunity to find fault. Because Hong Kong had not yet returned to China at that time. Therefore, the Kuomintang's spies can run rampant in Hong Kong, and they have already set their sights on Shen Zui who is about to come to Hong Kong.

Du Yuming couldn't help but worry when he learned that his friend Shen Zui was going to Hong Kong to visit relatives. Before Shen Zui left, he took his hand and said in particular: : The motherland cannot be reunified, and the flesh and blood on both sides of the Taiwan Strait cannot be reunited. They have unshirkable responsibilities. . The great cause of the reunification of the motherland must be completed in the hands of their generation.

After Shen Zui arrived in Hong Kong in 1981, Shen Zui's second daughter came to visit him from the United States. His second daughter was called Shen Xiaoxiong, an American businessman.

During the conversation between father and daughter, Shen Xiaoxiong mentioned Duan Kewen, a villain who wrote articles to maliciously attack the Communist Party in order to attract people's attention in exchange for generous money.

Shen Xiaoxiong also suggested that his father write some remarks attacking the Communist Party, such as the inhuman treatment he suffered in prison, etc., but Shen Zui sternly refused. In the following days, spies came to visit him and invited him to come over.

After Shen Zui arrived in Hong Kong, many of his relatives, friends and students called to persuade him to stay and enjoy a happy life. Some were willing to provide housing, and some said they would guarantee all living expenses, but Shen Zui declined politely.

Due to various reasons, Shenzui decided to return to Beijing after a short stay in Hong Kong for 27 days, despite the dissuasion of his former friends. At that time, the overseas passports given to Shen Zui and his daughter were valid for one year. Many people were surprised by Shen Zui's behavior.

In an interview many years later, when Shen Zui was asked about this, he explained the reason:

"Because I remembered what my mother said to me at that time: A person can not be an official, but he must be a A person. I think that as a Chinese, when faced with such a big issue of right and wrong, any Chinese person will hope that the motherland will be reunified as soon as possible.
