Karuizawa whiskey to be auctioned

Karuizawa was once the smallest whiskey factory in Japan and one of the oldest single malt whiskey brands in Japan. Karuizawa was founded in 1955 and did not start until the 1980s. It emerged in the Japanese market. Later, with the economic recession in Japan, many industries in Japan were also affected, and Karuizawa was also inevitable. In 2000, Karuizawa began to cease production and was completely closed in 2011.

Kirin acquired Karuizawa and its parent company Meluka in 2007. Unfortunately, the company has no intention of reviving and continuing to operate Karuizawa. Instead, it will store the original Karuizawa sake in the warehouse. Used to blend another whiskey brand owned by the company.

Although the Karuizawa Distillery no longer exists, its remaining single-barrel original wine has an excellent reputation. Since its suspension, the remaining inventory of Karuizawa has been continuously reduced, and demand has gradually begun to exceed supply, so that new products have appeared. It sells out quickly upon release and the auction price keeps rising. At the Bonhams auction in Hong Kong in August 2015, a bottle of 1960 Karuizawa whiskey sold for a high price of HK$918,750, setting a world record for the highest price for a single bottle of Japanese whiskey.
