Hydrogen Energy : Commercial Vehicle Demonstration Passenger Cars Can Be Expected

"The Ten Years of Automobile Travel" Series Report

Ten Years ago, due to the imperfect industrial chain, hydrogen fuel car was basically customized pilot application in small batches and special scenarios. With the continuous improvement of technology and basic settings, coupled with the support of hydrogen energy industry policies, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are entering a period of rapid development.

Hydrogen fuel buses and dump trucks are occasionally passed on nearby roads; a large hydrogen refueling station has been completed and put into use, and occasionally vehicles enter hydrogen refueling... This is the scene that the reporter from China Economic Network recently saw when he visited the Beijing Daxing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone.

According to the above-mentioned person in charge of the hydrogen refueling station, this is the largest hydrogen refueling station in Asia. The daily hydrogen refueling capacity is about 2-3 tons, and it can refuel up to 4.8 tons. It currently provides services for more than 600 hydrogen fuel vehicles in , Daxing District, . Driver Mr. Liu said, "Our company has recently added 30-40 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, not only heavy trucks but also semi-trailers. It feels like there is no difference between driving and fuel vehicles."

With the continuous improvement of technology and basic settings, coupled with the support of hydrogen energy industry policies, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are entering a period of rapid development. Some industry insiders shouted, "2022 will be the first year of the outbreak of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles." Data shows that in the first eight months of this year, the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles in reached 2,000, a year-on-year increase of 2 times and 1.6 times respectively.

From pilot to commercial operation, commercial vehicles took the lead in

In China, the time when hydrogen fuel vehicles appeared in the public eye can be traced back to 2008. At that time, Foton Motor's hydrogen-fueled bus was implemented to demonstrate operation. "Although hydrogen fuel cell was mentioned very early, due to the imperfect industrial chain, it has not developed well in China. Ten years ago, hydrogen fuel vehicles were basically customized and piloted in small batches and special scenarios," said Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Fu Xiaokang, vice president of Great Wall Motors , also said in an interview with China Economic Net reporters, "There is a lack of unified planning for the research and development and application of hydrogen energy technology in my country, the key core technologies have not yet been broken through, the total cost is too high, and the technical patent barriers are serious, making it difficult to use hydrogen." Fu Xiaokang added, "The economic shortcomings are particularly prominent, and the core raw materials of hydrogen energy are lacking in localization and the import dependence is high, resulting in its price being high."

"With the gradual improvement of the industry, the hydrogen energy era of my country's commercial vehicles has begun." Qin Zhidong, vice president of business and president of Zhilan New Energy at , said that China's hydrogen fuel takes commercial vehicles as the entry point and is in a leading position in the world.

It is understood that enterprises including SAIC Hongyan, China National Heavy Truck Truck , FAW Jiefang , BAIC Foton , and Yutong Bus have layouts in the hydrogen energy field. Related vehicles can be commercially applied to special transportation work scenarios such as ports, cities, power plants, steel plants, industrial parks, etc. "Compared with pure electric vehicles, hydrogen-fuel commercial vehicles have the advantages of fast hydrogen refueling speed, long range, and light weight." Chen Shihua said.

At the same time, five major hydrogen energy demonstration zones in China have been initially formed in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Hebei, Henan, Shanghai and Guangdong, and other regions are also accelerating the issuance of policies and launching demonstrations. Among them, Beijing Daxing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone has attracted more than 40 industrial chain enterprises to settle down; Shanghai focuses on the research and development of core technologies of fuel cell vehicles, and the construction of the industrial chain has become increasingly perfect, and industrial clusters such as Jiading and Lingang have been initially formed.

Thanks to the gradual improvement of the industry, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have frequently "been out of the circle" in 2022.During the Beijing Winter Olympics at the beginning of this year, more than 1,000 hydrogen fuel vehicles were launched in demonstration; in mid-June, FAW Jiefang 300 hydrogen fuel vehicles started to be launched; in August, SAIC 410 hydrogen fuel vehicles were put into operation...

From the perspective of the value chain, hydrogen energy, especially green hydrogen, currently has strategic value and needs to seek commercial value. At present, the commercial vehicle field is a good breakthrough (sorry, limited capabilities, I didn’t understand the meaning of this sentence, is it what Ouyang Minggao said or which expert meant). Academician of , Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor of the School of Vehicles and Carriers of Tsinghua University, said, "We hope to use this as a breakthrough point and achieve scale in 2025 under the basis of the national urban demonstration group and subsidy policy."

has multiple favorable benefits, and the prospects for passenger cars are promising

In contrast, although passenger cars started late in the field of fuel cell , they have also made certain progress in recent years. SAIC Group revealed that it will focus on creating three major vehicle technology bases including "electric and hydrogen integrated vehicle architecture"; Great Wall Motor announced that it has realized the core technology layout of the full hydrogen energy industry chain; Changan Deep Blue SL03, which was launched in July, includes hydrogen-electric version models...

In fact, more and more car companies are laying out the hydrogen fuel ecosystem. As of the end of 2021, 41 Chinese vehicle manufacturers have begun to develop fuel cell vehicles. "If my country's hydrogen fuel cell vehicle promotion can achieve the goal of 1 million vehicles, it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 510 million tons in one year, which will greatly help achieve the goal of carbon neutrality ," Fu Xiaokang said. "Based on such a vision, Great Wall Motors' hydrogen energy ecosystem will contribute to China's carbon neutrality empowerment."

Recently, Great Wall Motors and Delong Group and Liben Energy signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement on hydrogen energy ecosystem. Wei Jianjun, chairman of Great Wall Motors, said that the signing of this contract is a key link in deepening the integrated supply chain ecosystem of Great Wall's hydrogen energy industry "manufacturing-storage-transportation-add-application". The tripartite cooperation will provide more possibilities for the domestic new energy transformation and hydrogen energy market application.

It is worth noting that my country has issued a number of policies to support the development of hydrogen energy industry. In 2020, five departments jointly issued a document to decide to carry out demonstration and application of fuel cell vehicles; at the beginning of this year, the "Medium- and Long-term Plan for the Development of the Hydrogen Energy Industry (2021-2035)" also mentioned that by 2025, the number of fuel cell vehicles will be held by about 50,000, and a number of hydrogen refueling stations will be deployed.

Local governments have also intensively introduced support policies to actively seize the "new track" for hydrogen energy development. According to incomplete statistics, the plans of 13 provinces and cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, etc., will reach a total of 68,000 hydrogen fuel vehicles by 2025 and 676 hydrogen refueling stations. Qin Zhidong revealed that in 2021, China will achieve three "firsts" in the world in the number of hydrogen refueling stations built, the number of hydrogen refueling stations built, and the number of new hydrogen refueling stations built. As of the end of June 2022, more than 270 hydrogen refueling stations have been built nationwide.

"At present, hydrogen fuel technology is not mature enough, and the cost is still high, but from the perspective of energy, it is a feasible solution." Chen Shihua said that in the future, with the continuous improvement of technology and infrastructure, policy support, and the continuous exploration of car companies, hydrogen fuel vehicles have certain development potential and may even complement pure electric and plug-in hybrid power.

"As the domesticization process of core technologies accelerates and the market scale effect continues to highlight, the costs of core components and vehicles are rapidly declining; secondly, the cost of renewable energy power generation continues to decrease, and technologies such as liquid hydrogen transportation continue to mature. It is expected that the terminal price of hydrogen will drop to below 20 yuan/kg in 2025. By then, the cost of hydrogen fuel and traditional vehicles will remain the same." Fu Xiaokang said.
