In the college entrance examination in 1989, Jia Liming failed the exam due to a 10-point difference. He returned to his hometown Douziyu Township, Xinglong County and became a junior high school English substitute teacher.
The teaching conditions were very poor at that time. The school does not have a recorder, the pronunciation of teachers and students is not standard, and their English grades are poor. Some junior high school graduates cannot even speak 26 English letters.
"Although I failed the exam, I want to help my hometown children get out of the exam." Jia Liming sold the eggs and two sheep at home, plus his two-month substitute salary, and bought a recorder, a set of English listening tapes and an English-Chinese dictionary at his own expense. In order to improve his English teaching level, he prepares classes during the day to tutor students; in the evening, he corrects homework, checks materials, practices pronunciation and learns speaking with the tape recorder until late at night.
"One night, I learned and practiced, and fell asleep unknowingly. The candle at the head of the bed burned the bed, and I was awakened by the thick smoke in the room, so I quickly put out the fire." Jia Liming said.
After three years of hard work, the first child led by Jia Liming made an average score of English in the county in the middle school entrance examination. Two more children were admitted to technical secondary school, which is the first time in school history. Jia Limin rushed home as if he had been admitted to university and cried with his mother, "I feel like everything is worth it!"
Since he started teaching, in the 11 graduating classes led by Jia Limin, 8 high school entrance examination results (comprehensive weighted rankings such as average scores and excellent rates) ranked among the top three in the county, and 5 times won the first place in the county.
