"Bodhidharma faces the wall·Shen Guang Asking"

Monk Shen Guang heard Da grinding Shaolin, so he went to respectfully, the master sat upright, and did not hear the encouragement. Guang said, "Can all Buddha seals be heard?" The master said, "The Buddha seals be obtained by others." Guang said, "My heart is not yet peaceful, so I beg your teacher to be at peace." The master said, "I will come to you, and I will be at peace." Guang said, "I can't find my heart." The master said, "I can't find my heart."
The second ancestor of Zen Buddhism, Huike, was originally called Shenguang, and she has extraordinary ambitions since she was a child. She is open-minded. It is said that Bodhidharma came from the east and met the divine light who preached in Nanjing. The divine light was full of pride and extremely humble. Later, he wanted to ask for advice from Bodhidharma, so he followed Bodhidharma all the way to Shaolin. Bodhidharma did not know whether he was sincere or not, so he politely refused.
Starting, Master Bodhidharma only cared about meditating against the wall and ignored him at all. The divine light constantly used the spirit of ancient despising one's body to encourage himself: "The past people sought the Tao, knocked bones and marrow, pricked blood to help hunger, spread hair and covered mud, and threw themselves into the cliff to feed tigers. If this were the ancients, who would be me?"
is like this. He stayed outside the cave every day from morning to night, and did not dare to slack off at all. Day after day, winter came, and one night, the divine light of heavy snow fell from the sky was still standing there, motionless. When it was almost dawn, the snow actually covered his knees.
At this time, Master Bodhidharma slowly turned around, looked at him, felt compassionate, and asked, "What should you ask for when you have been standing in the snow for a long time?"
Huike said: "I hope that the monk will be compassionate, open the door of nectar, and broaden the masses."
Patriarch Bodhidharma said: "The supreme and wonderful way of all Buddhas is diligent for a long time, and it is difficult to do it, and it is not to endure but tolerate it. How can you be with small virtues and wisdom, be careless and arrogant, and want to hope for the true nature of the Buddhas. Vehicle, in vain and hard work (the supreme wonderful path taught by the Buddhas must practice diligently and diligently over the years, and practice what ordinary people cannot do, and endure what ordinary people cannot endure. How can it be realized by a person with a small virtue and a little wisdom and arrogance? If you seek the One Vehicle Dharma with a small virtue and arrogance, you can only be a fool, and you will only work hard and will not have any results). "
After listening to the teachings and encouragement of the ancestors, in order to express your grave interest in seeking the Dharma, Taoist Shen Guang picked up a sickle and cut off his left arm, and blood suddenly turned red in the snow.
Patriarch Bodhidharma was moved by Zen Master Huike's pious actions, so he said: "The Buddhas first sought the Tao and forgot their bodies for the Dharma. Now, when you cut off your arms, you can also seek it (when all Buddhas first sought the Tao, they always spared their lives and forgot their bodies for the Dharma. Now, in order to seek the Dharma, you will also imitate the Buddhas in front of me and cut off their arms. In this way, you will definitely succeed in seeking the Dharma). "
Patriarch Bodhidharma changed the name of the divine light to Huike.
Zen Master Huike asked: "Can all Buddha Dharma seals be heard?"
Bodhidharma said: "The Buddha Dharma seals are not (not) obtained from people."
Zen Master Huike was confused when he heard this, and said: "My heart is not peaceful, I beg for peace to the master."
Bodhidharma replied: "Come your heart and be at peace with you."
Zen Master Huike pondered for a long time and replied: "It is impossible to find your heart."
The ancestor then replied: "I am at peace with you."
Zen Master Huike heard Bodhidharma's answer and immediately realized his mind and was excited. It turns out that there is no real mind to obtain, nor is there a real "uneasiness" to be at ease. Sadness and uneasiness are all delusions.
After Zen Master Huike became enlightened, he continued to stay with Master Bodhidharma for six years (also known as nine years). Later, he inherited the ancestor's mantle and became the second ancestor of Zen.

"Hongren Child Body·Daohuishou Old Man"

th Ancestor Hongren Master, from Huangmei, Qizhou. The surname is Zhou, and he was born with Qi Yi. When a child was traveling, he met a wise man and sighed, "This son lacks seven kinds of appearances but cannot match Tathagata ." Later, he met Master Xin and was transformed into Potou Mountain after he was inherited from the Dharma.
The fifth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, Hongren, whose original surname was Zhou, was a Taoist of Zhaisong in Potou Mountain in his previous life. The Fourth Patriarch Daoxin once stayed in Potou Mountain. Taoist Zhai Song went to ask the Fourth Patriarch Daoxin: Can I learn the Buddhist teachings you are talking about?
The Fourth Patriarch Daoxin said, you are too old, even if you can learn, how can you widely spread and promote Buddhism? If you come again in the next life, I will wait for you to preach your Dharma.
Taoist Zasong heard this and left. He walked to a river and met a girl squatting there washing clothes. So he went up and asked: Can you stay at your house?
The girl replied: My father and brother are all at home, just go and ask them to agree.
Taoist replied: As long as you agree, it’s fine. After saying that, he turned around and walked away, not knowing where he was going.
This girl’s surname is Zhou, and she is the fourth daughter of the Zhou family and is not married yet. Strangely, the girl became pregnant shortly after she returned home from the laundry. In ancient times, it was a shameful thing for a woman to get pregnant without marriage. Therefore, the girl's parents drove her out of the house. In this way, the girl has no home and has no support, so she has to live a wandering life.
Later, he gave birth to a baby and secretly threw the baby into a ditch. I hope to let it go and die for myself, but I couldn't bear it. The next day, when she went to see it, she found that the child was floating upstream of the ditch, and her small body was fresh and tender, and she was very confident, so she couldn't help but hold the baby in her arms and raise it to her. In this way, she took her child and begged along the village, and people called this child "no surname".
In the blink of an eye, this child grew to seven years old. One day I met a monk on the road. This monk is the fourth ancestor. The Fourth Patriarch looked at the child carefully and felt that his bones were strange and familiar. However, he had long forgotten his agreement with Taoist Zhaisong, and just sighed: This child is so strange. There are only seven kinds of appearances in a real man. Although his appearance is not as perfect as the Buddha, if he can become a monk and practice Taoism, he will definitely be able to inherit the Dharma in twenty years and be a blessing for all living beings!
Fourth ancestor asked the child: What is your surname?
The child replied: I am not an ordinary surname.
Fourth ancestor said: Even if it is not an ordinary surname, you must have a surname, right?
The child said: My surname is Buddha.
The Fourth Ancestor was surprised and said seriously: Don’t you have a surname?
The child said: I am empty in nature, so I have no surname.
The fourth ancestor gave the child the Dharma name: Hongren.
Hongren was still very young when he became a monk, so he lived in Shuangfeng Mountain and was taken by the fourth ancestor. Of course, we can also understand that Hongren has been serving him by the Fourth Patriarch.
Later, when the cause and condition finally matured, the Fourth Patriarch Daoxin handed over his velvet to Zen Master Hongren, making him the fifth ancestor of our Zen Buddhism. When the Dharma was passed on to the Dharma, the Fourth Patriarch also passed on a verse:
The flower species has a natural nature, and the flower is born in the realm.
The great fate and nature are combined, and they should not be born.
Perhaps, because of this, it is not difficult for us to understand why Hongren passed on his mantle to Huineng later. In fact, they all have an inner lineage.

"Baijuyi Gongju·Bird Neck Finger Say"

1Bird Nest Zen Master Daolin lived in Qiantang . At that time, Bai Juyi went into the mountain to visit the master and said, "The Zen Master is in a very dangerous place!" The master said, "The prefect is even more dangerous!" Bai said, "Disciple lives in the mountains and rivers, why are there any dangers?" The master said, "The fireworks intersect, and the nature of knowledge is constantly stopped. Isn't it dangerous?" He asked, "What is the main intention of Buddhism?" The master said, "Don't do any evil, and do all good." Bai said, "What should I do if a three-year-old child understands it." The master said, "Although a three-year-old child can do it, an eighty-year-old man cannot do it!" Bai then bowed.
Tang Dynasty Zen Master Daolin passed the Dharma to Hangzhou and saw that there were long pine trees in Qinwang Mountain in the south of the city, with lush branches and leaves as lush as a cover. He built a nest on the tree and stayed on the top of meditation. People at that time called him Zen Master Niaoke.
In the second year of Changqing, Bai Juyi was appointed as the governor of Hangzhou and came to the mountain to meet with Daolin in his name.
Bai Juyi saw the Zen master sitting high on the tree and said, "It's too dangerous for the Zen master to live in the tree, hurry up and get down!"
Zen Master Niao Ke replied with a smile: "Prefect, your situation is actually more dangerous!"
Bai Juyi asked back, "I am an official in the court, why are there any dangers?"
Zen Master Niao Ke said, "The torch is constantly stopping, and you know how to attack sexually, how can you be dangerous?" It means that the officialdom is ups and downs, intrigue, and dangers are everywhere.
Bai Juyi seemed to have some understanding and asked Zen Master Niaoke: "How to understand Zen?" Zen Master Niaoke said: "Don't do evil, do good, and purify your own mind. This is all Buddhists!" Bai Juyi said: "All three-year-old children know that they may not have any high views." "Zen Master Niaoke said seriously: "A three-year-old child can understand the truth, but a centenarian cannot do it. "
Bai Juyi was so awe-inspiring to Zen Master Niaoke, completely changing his self-reliance. So he worshiped Zen Master Niaoke as his master and wrote two poems "Gived to Monk Bird" for him.

advises you not to hit the bird on the branch, and the son is looking for his mother to return in the nest.
Another time, Zen Master Niaoke, Bai Juyi's third brother, and others discussed Zen Master Niaoke together. A servant next to him wanted to leave. Zen Master Niaoke asked: "Where are you going?" The servant said: "Learn Buddhism from all directions. "Zen Master Niaoke pulled out a piece of cloth hair and said, "If it is Buddhism, I have Xiao Xu here too. "The attendant suddenly realized. Bai Juyi's third brother saw this scene and wrote a poem:
Baitou layman talked to Zen master, which was when Lingyan Samadhi .
Nothing can be enough, how many people can know about Hengsha?
After Bai Juyi met Zen Master Niaoke, he often asked him about Zen. Once, Bai Juyi asked Zen Master Niaoke in a verse:
Special entry into the void door to ask about the suffering and emptiness, and dared to ask Zen Master Zen.
It is a dream that is a floating life Things are in a dream for the restoration of life.
Zen Master Niao Ke replied in a verse:
There is no trace when he comes, and he goes with the current affairs.
Why should I ask about the things about life? This is just the life in a dream.
Bai Juyi listened to the teachings of Zen Master Niao Ke, and realized his way of resting and establishing his life from Buddhism. Finally, he became a great lay Buddhist with profound artistic conception and unparalleled cultivation. He also built a bamboo attic next to West Lake to "communicate day and night" with Zen Master Niao Ke.
In his later years, Bai Juyi was even more attentive to his heart and changed his residence to Xiangshan Temple, calling himself Xiangshan Layman . Later, people transformed the bamboo attic into Guanghua Temple .

"Zhixian embraces the broom and look back at the bamboo forest"

Zhengzhou Xiangyan Zen Master Zhixian took out herbs and trees in one day, occasionally knocking rubble and hitting bamboo to make sounds, and suddenly woke up. Then he returned to bathe and burned incense and worshipped Weishan, and praised him, "My good deeds are more kind than his parents. If he had told me at that time, how could he do what he is today?" Qian said, "I forgot what I know with one blow, and I will practice it."
Zen Master Baizhang Huaihai is still preaching the Dharma, so Zen Master Zhixian went to study in person. Zen Master Zhixian is smart and has a lot of knowledge of the teachings. He can talk freely whenever he asks for rewards, but he never understands his duties. Later, Baizhang Zen Master passed away, and he changed to his senior brother, Zen Master Weishan Lingyou.
Zen Master Weishan asked, "I heard that you were at the
00-zhang master, and you answered ten questions and answered ten questions and answered ten questions and answered ten questions and answered a hundred questions. This is your cleverness, wisdom, understanding, thinking, and the root of life and death. When your parents were not born, try to tell me. (You are so smart and smart, so where are you when your parents were not born to you? Can you tell me?)"
Zen Master Zhixian was confused by Zen Master Weishan's question.
After returning to the dormitory, he moved out all the scriptures he had read on weekdays, searching them from beginning to end, hoping to find a suitable answer from them, but after reading them for a few days, he found nothing. Zen Master Zhixian sighed, " Painting Cake cannot satisfy your hunger."
So he went to the abbot's room many times and begged Zen Master Weishan to explain it to him, but he was rejected by Zen Master Weishan. Zen Master Weishan said, "If I say it is like you, you will scold me later (later). I say it is my fault and I will never do your business."
In despair, Zen Master Zhixian burned the words he had read in the past and said, "I will not study Buddhism in this life, and I will be a monk who travels for a long time to avoid the mental health."
Zen Master Zhixian said goodbye to Weishan in tears and began to walk around. One day, he came to the former site of Zen Master Huizhong in Nanyang. After witnessing the ruins of the Taoist temple of Huizhong National Master , I thought this place was pretty good, so I decided to live here and pick it up.
One day, Zen Master Zhixian was purging the plants and trees. He accidentally threw up a piece of rubble and hit it on bamboo , making a crisp sound, and he suddenly realized. So he hurriedly returned to the room, bathed incense, worshipped Weishan from afar, and praised, "The monk is so kind that he is more kind than his parents. If he told me at that time, why did he do what he is today?" He also wrote a verse and said, "Have you forgotten what he knows with one blow, and it is not just about practicing.
Move the ancient road and never fall into a quiet opportunity.
There is no trace everywhere, and the voice and color are majestic.
Those who achieve the Tao all say that they are at the top of the body.
When Master Weishan heard about this verse from Zen Master Zhixian, he said to Zen Master Yangshan, "He has been enlightened."

"Li Yuan Yuanze is in the boat, and the woman's journey is in the water"

Li Yuan and Master Yuanze travel Meishan . When the boat went to Nanpu, he saw a woman with a brocade crotch and a flower collar carrying a baby and a crawling ze, and cried, "I should entrust this girl to avoid it. On August 15, 18th year, I will meet you in Tianzhu Mountain, Hangzhou." After saying that, he died. Hou Yuan went to India as scheduled to see a Hermitage Maggot, saying, "Li Yuan really believes in people!" Yuan immediately responded and said, "The Yuan Ze is fine." Mu Er then sang and said, "The old soul on the Three Lives Stone is everywhere." After singing, he left with his sleeves.
Tang Dynasty hermit Li Yuan lived in Huilin Temple . He was close to the abbot Yuanze and was a soulmate. The two made an appointment to visit Mount Emei, Sichuan. Yuanze wanted to enter Sichuan by land from Dao Chang'an .
Under Li Yuan's insistence, the two entered Sichuan from the Yangtze River. On the road, I met a pregnant woman who had not given birth to three years. Yuanze cried when he saw the pregnant woman, saying that he was unwilling to go on the water because he was destined to be the woman's son, and he couldn't hide when he met her.
He and Li Yuan met at the Mid-Autumn Festival night thirteen years later. Yuanze passed away that night and the pregnant woman also gave birth to a child successfully.
Thirteen years later, Li Yuan came to Three Lives Stone as promised and saw a shepherd boy singing:
The old spirit on the Three Lives Stone, enjoy the moon and chant the wind, don’t talk about it.
Shame lovers visit each other from afar, although this body lasts forever.
Li Yuan recognized him, and the shepherd boy said that he was the Garden Ze, but the fate of the world has not yet ended and he could not stay for a long time. He sang:
The past and the future are in chaos, and if you want to talk, you may be heartbroken.
Wu Yue has traveled all over the country, but he returns to Qutang on the smoke boat.
left after singing.
The shepherd boy sang and walked, gradually moving away, gradually integrating into the vast mountain mist, and nowhere to go from now on.
Rivers sobbed, mountains and forests were scary, and heroes were heartbroken...
Three years later, the minister of the dynasty Li Deyu heard about this and believed that Li Yuan was the son of a loyal minister and was very filial, so he recommended the court and asked to be appointed as an official position. Soon, the emperor issued an edict and appointed Li Yuan as the counselor. But at this time, Li Yuan had already seen through the world and realized his life, so he would be willing to submit to fame and fortune. Later, he kept chanting Buddha's name in the temple. When he was eighty, he would be reborn in the Pure Land and the major matter was completed.
The story of Zen Master Yuanze and Li Yuan has been widely circulated. Today, outside Tianzhu Temple in West Lake, Hangzhou, a large stone is left behind. It is said that it was the place where they met in different lifetimes, called the "Three Lives Stone".

"Guanxi Suo Drink·Boy's Fangji"

Guanxi Xian Zen Master meets a boy to draw water on the road. The master begged for water to drink, and the boy said, "It's okay to beg for water. I have a question, how much dust is there in the water?" The master said, "It doesn't contain all dust." The boy smiled and took the water and said, "Don't be dirty and scattered."
Zen master Guanxi Zhixian saw a child draw water by the river, so he begged for drinks from him. The boy said, "It's okay to beg for water, but you can say, how much dust is there in this water?"
Guanxi said, "It doesn't contain all dust."
The boy felt that this answer was too coincidental and did not give the Zen master water. Then he smiled and left with water, saying, "Don't dirty my water for you."
The little boy asked, "How much dust is there in the water, that is, Guanxi's experience of color methods." Zen Master Guanxi has not yet drunk water, so how could he know that water is spotless? What if he finds dust in the water when drinking water? In order to drink water, the Zen master politely and pleasingly said that the water is very clean. This dirty and clean discriminatory mind is already in the Zen master's consciousness. This desire distorts the original appearance of water. If you have clean thoughts, you will have dirty thoughts, so the boy replied, don’t dirty my water.
No matter whether the water is clean or not, your desires are no longer pure.
Zen method is popular in the Tang Dynasty. Lay people often have Zen methods that are deeper than monks. This story is an example.

"A corner of the restaurant·Worship by the Louzi"

Louzi monk's name is Shan, from Jinpingjiang, and his surname is Yang. At first, he was floating in Sishi. One day he went to Chengtian Temple to listen to the Dharma. After a sacrificial period, he became a monk and received the gift. I occasionally went to the restaurant and heard a song and said, "If you don't care, I'll stop!" I bowed in front of the building and said, "If you don't know this is the case."
The monk, whose original name is Yang Shan, is from Jinpingjiang. In his early years, he was a gangster, idle and idle among the trunks. After all, he was a person with wisdom. One day he was at Chengtian Temple and had some insights. He then became a monk and took precepts, meditated and meditated, but he was unable to be enlightened.
Later, I accidentally passed by a street market. When he was walking downstairs in a restaurant, he found that his shoelaces were loose, so he bent down to tie them. Suddenly, I heard the bridesmaids singing from the restaurant, saying, "...I don't want to stop if you have no intention..."
The monk immediately stayed in place and suddenly realized. He bowed several times towards the restaurant. Therefore, people at that time called him Louzi monk.
It either has the opportunity or the content of the lyrics has caused an epiphany. "I'll stop if you have no intention." This is not only the words between the long love between the singers and children, but also the monk Louzi suddenly realized.

"Gou Peng Reed Bank·Men leans on the fishing cart"

Zen Master Xuanshabei of Fujian, the son of Xie family. He fished in Nantai Jiangfu for a young age and became a monk at thirty years old. He followed Zen Master Rongxun to receive the gift. His brother looked at Xuefeng and taught him. One day, Feng said, "Why don't you go all over the place?" The master said, "Damo cannot come to the east, and the second ancestor will not go to the west." Feng said, "He said, "He will not come to the east, and the second ancestor will not go to the west." The master once showed that: It is as bright as the shadow of the moon in the autumn pond, the sound of the bells in the quiet night, and the carefree movement is free of damage, and it is still a matter of life and death, and the Taoist walks like fire and ice.
The late Tang Dynasty
th dynasty period, there was a young man named Xie in Fujian who liked fishing. He went on a small boat on the Nantai River every day to play with the fishermen on the river. The years have been so peaceful and peaceful, until he was thirty years old, when he recalled this past life, he suddenly had a strong idea of conversion, so he abandoned the boat and threw himself to the seat of Zen Master Furong Lingxu. Take the ordination after losing your hair. This is Master Xuansha Bei Zen Master.
After the Zen Master Furong Lingxun passed away, he was treated by his brother Ju Ren to see Zen Master Xuefeng and taught him. After that, he was taciturn and devoted himself to practicing, dressed up his clothes and meditated all day long. Everyone was surprised at how huge changes he had before and after, and
Zen Master Xuefeng asked him one day: "Why don't Bitou Tuo travel around the world and learn about Buddhism?"
Zen Master Xuansha said: "Bodhidharma will not come to the east land, and the second ancestor will not go to the west." After hearing this, Zen Master Xuefeng nodded and said yes.
Patriarch Bodhidharma has arrived in the East Land, and the second patriarch Huike spared no hesitation to seek the Buddhist teachings of the West.
Why did Zen Master Xuefeng nod and say yes?
The temple is under your feet, and the world is around you. You can become a Buddha immediately. People have nowhere to come from, and nowhere to go. Nowhere to come and remove it is possible. The land does not matter to the east, west, south and north. Therefore, it doesn’t matter whether it comes to the East Land, and it doesn’t matter whether it goes to the West. Opportunities are everywhere, enlightenment is always there.
In the painting, Master Xuansha is sitting alone on the bow of the boat, floating on the river, just as he deserves his verse:
is as smooth as the shadow of the moon in the autumn pond,
is silent at night,
is easy-going and has no sent,
is not dispersed,
is especially a matter of life and death.
The walkway is still burning ice.

This scroll is more skillful than Liang Kai's later freehand , and compared with Liang Kai's fine brushwork, it is one of the three phases of Liang Kai. The characters in the painting are blended with landscapes, and are characterized by Liang Kai's snow scenery and the landscape of the mountains and rivers, and the pictures of Sakyamuni's out-of-mountain. The characters in the painting are mostly drawn with folded reeds and nail-headed rat-tails to express the twists, tightness and density of the clothes. The background rocks are rendered with a summary and refined ink color, and the carefully tailed scene layout is used to set off the body pattern of the main character. The brush lines are loose but not soft, powerful but not engraved, the composition is full, the scene is blended, and the artistic conception is profound.
Everything has its own rules and trajectories, and it is difficult for the outside world to change, just like the destined life and death. The various Zen techniques in the painting are too idealistic in today's materialist history, and they take apart the stories in the painting, watch Liang Kai's paintings change in brush and ink, write them from their own skills, take off the layers of flesh and blood, forget the image, walk out of the shape, and reach the peak of freehand painting. From the brushes on the screen to the simple brushes, just like the practice and sudden enlightenment of the Zen masters in this painting, they all realize it in one day and suddenly see the Tathagata.
I heard that Liang Kai is addicted to alcohol, is crazy, and regards fame as grass. Liang Kai was originally a palace painter in the Southern Song Dynasty. Later, the emperor gave him a golden belt but refused to accept it and left the palace resolutely. If you do not seek fame at the beginning, you will not be given the title of a court painter here. If you do not realize it later, you will not have to leave.
Liang Kai often paints Buddhist monks such as Sixth Patriarch Huineng and Buddai monk , all of which are beyond the pen and ink.
Although Liang Kai is not a monk, his pen and ink realm has become empty.
In his early years, he was a gangster, idle and idle among the trunks. After all, he was a person with wisdom. One day he was at Chengtian Temple and had some insights.
