Lao Fanzhi replied, "No one in the world is stupid. They have eyes but cannot see things, so I use a torch to illuminate them. It turns out that this old Fanzhi believes that he has extensive knowledge and knows everything in the world. Therefore, he is arrogant and seeks people

　　In the Meiyin Temple in Kushan Ni, Buddha is teaching the great Dharma widely to the four groups of disciples. There was an old Fanzhi who walked in the city with a torch all day long. Someone asked him, "Why are you walking with a torch in broad daylight?"

　　Old Fanzhi replied, "No one in the world is stupid. They have eyes but cannot see things, so I use a torch to illuminate them."

　It turned out that this old Fanzhi believed that he had extensive knowledge and knew everything in the world, so he was arrogant and looked for people to debate everywhere, but no one dared to challenge him.

　After the Buddha knew, he was determined to save him, so he deliberately met him on the road and asked him, "Why are you running around the street with a torch in broad daylight?"

　　Old Fanzhi said, "Because people are in darkness and cannot see the light day and night, I took the torch to illuminate them."

　　The Buddha asked the Fanzhi again, "There is the saying of "Si Ming" in the scriptures, do you know?"

　　"I have never heard of what "Si Ming" is." Lao Fanzhi answered in surprise.

　　The Buddha said: "The so-called Four Mings are: 1. Be familiar with astronomy and geography, and understand the principles of the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter; 2. Be familiar with the relationship between sun, moon, stars, and five elements such as gold, wood, water, fire and earth; 3. Be familiar with the methods of governing the country and understanding the major plans for safeguarding and fighting; 4. Be familiar with military affairs, be familiar with the methods of commanding and fighting, and be able to defend and consolidate the country and prevent it from losing. You are a monk, do you know that there are these Four Mings?"

　　Old Fanzhi felt ashamed because he had never heard of the Four Mings, so he threw the torch and put his hands together at the Buddha. The Buddha knew that he had a repentance, so he said a verse to him in the Sanskrit sound:

If you hear a little, you will be arrogant and humiliate others.

is like holding a blind candle, shining on him without realizing it.

　　This verse means that if you have a little knowledge, you will be arrogant and arrogant, it is like a blind man holding a candle in his hand, illuminating others, but not seeing the light himself.

　After the Buddha said the verse, he told Lao Fanzhi: "I am afraid no one in the world is more foolish than you. You are walking on the street with a torch during the day. As you know, this strange behavior is not like dust. No one cares about it?"

　　Lao Fanzhi was even more ashamed at this time, and immediately knelt down and bowed to the Buddha, begging the Buddha to accept him as his disciple and changed his arrogant attitude in the past.

　The Buddha taught us to be self-lighting and Dharma lamps, which means that we should understand Buddhism and use the wisdom torch of Prajna to illuminate our own ignorance, rather than being arrogant and being arrogant and picky about others' shortcomings.
