This Indian Zen monk has an extraordinary legend in his life, and his mind is enough to influence the entire world culture. The Yinhan Cave sat like a mountain, still moving, and it took 9 years to pass; a reed stepped into a boat, and saw the leisurely crossing the river; a straw sandal, rebirth in the Pure Land. A series of magical and extraordinary actions have attracted the hearts of future generations and sentient beings to praise: He is a real living Buddha of the world. Without him, there would be no Buddha.
In my opinion, his deeds may not be revealed in his entire life. His influence may not be destroyed in the next thousand years, and any famous thing in the world will lose some of its sharpness in front of him. His name and his vivid image may have been engraved in the depths of your and my mind as a child.
As a descendant of Yan and Huang, you and I may not know much about India and cannot see all the moods of this country, but I have a special liking for this person.
will feel happy as soon as you mention it.
name blurted out without thinking...
He is the 28th generation of Zen in India and the first ancestor of Chinese Zen: Bodhidharma .
What is his feat? And how did he spread Buddhism to China and became the first ancestor of Zen Buddhism?
Next, let us fade away the infinite deification of it by future generations and appreciate the lifelong character of this generation of masters from a real perspective.
South Heavenly Kingdom (India), a child came here and named Bodhidara, becoming the third son in the family. However, his birth was extremely honorable and lucky, as if he was chosen by God.
are either the son of the kingdom or the son of the Buddha...
My father was the king of the country in the south of Heaven. He was extremely devout to Buddhism throughout his life, and the entire royal family was even shrouded in the influence of Buddha nature. In this way, Bodhidharah not only became a kingdom with a golden spoon in his mouth, but also gradually grew up under the influence of Buddhism.
flipping through the scriptures with one hand and reading countless Buddhist scriptures became his homework day after day when he was young.
However, Dora was extremely intelligent since childhood, and his unique Buddhist insights made others admire him. Perhaps his life's destiny became a definite here.
The arrival of a venerable has completely laid the foundation for his life. This venerable is the 27th generation of the founder of Indian Zen Buddhism and the venerable of Prajna.
At this time, the Prajna Duo Venerable was traveling to the Kingdom of Heaven to promote Buddhism, tell the mystery of Zen, and save all sentient beings. Rich wisdom, the brilliance of Buddha nature. All of this was seen by Bodhidharra. In the eyes of Dora, the old man who came to preach the Dharma in front of him was like a Buddha himself. Isn’t it the Buddha himself? A bold decision arose in my heart, and my actions and great wishes made everyone shocked: I want to worship the Lord as my teacher, so as to inherit my legacy and promote Buddhism throughout the world.
Then, he officially took refuge in Prajna Duo and became the great disciple of the Venerable. At this time, the adult Bodhidharma changed its name to Bodhidharma according to customs. Finally, he became the 28th generation of Zen master in India.
In this way, we will cut off the country's great responsibility and shoulder the great responsibility of spreading the Dharma. He could have enjoyed all his glory and wealth in his life, below one person and above ten thousand people. But I am willing to let go of everything and become a Buddha immediately. A generation of nations eventually became Buddhist sons.
Perhaps, many people cannot understand his decision at the time.
But at this time, no one thought that the thoughts of this Bodhidharma who abandoned the throne and entered the empty sect will be carried forward to the whole world in the future. It not only influenced world culture, but also influenced generation after generation, but also sowed lotus flowers in distant China until it lasted for thousands of years.
A consultation with his master actually made him have an indissoluble bond with China. The wheel of fate quietly opened. The brilliance of his life began.
"Master, where should I spread it after I realize the Dharma?"
Unexpectedly, after hearing it, the Venerable Prajna Duo pointed out the future path of spreading the Dharma by a few words.
"You should go to Zhendan (China), and people there can understand Buddhist principles."
Questions and answers, firmly answers. After hearing this, Bodhidharma naturally remembered his master's teachings, and then packed his luggage and left his master and his family.
A small boat rides the wind and waves, and crosses the ocean. This journey is not easy. Strong storms, going through hardships, life and death. A full three years have passed. The strange country finally appeared in front of me. Bodhidharma had a beard and cheek, a disheveled face, but he was filled with joy, his eyes were bright and energetic, and his temperament was extraordinary.
At this time, he might not have thought that this step into China would be a life-long rush.
Bodhidharma's three words of mantra angered the emperor, Emperor Wu of Liang turned against him on the spot
When he arrived in China, he had not yet stopped, he suddenly saw an envoy find Bodhidharma. A smiley face shows your intention.
It turned out that as soon as Bodhidharma entered Guangzhou, he was known to the governor of Guangzhou, and a distinguished guest came from afar. Immediately informed of Jinling .
Following the order of Emperor Wu of Liang, Xiao Yan, the envoy came to pick up Bodhidharma to Kyoto to welcome the wind and dust.
Originally, the meeting with Emperor Wu of Liang should be harmonious, and the guests from afar should naturally be treated with the guests' courtesy. However, afterwards, Bodhidharma's words were out of control.
Emperor Wu of Liang was immediately aggressive and drove Bodhidharma out in anger.
The two of them had a cold sweat when they heard it.
"Master, since I ascended the throne, I have devoted myself to practicing Buddhism. Not only writing scriptures and copying books, but also building Buddhist temples. What kind of merit do you think I have?" Emperor Wu of Liang originally wanted to ask about his own merits.
originally thought that Bodhidharma would praise Emperor Wu of Liang for this, but he didn't expect that Bodhidharma had no face at all. With just one sentence, he was extremely calm: "No merit or no virtue, just like a shadow. Do you think it has it or not?" When
answered, Emperor Wu of Liang was stunned for a moment, feeling dissatisfied in his heart, as if his self-esteem had been severely damaged: I am the emperor after all, how can I say I have no merits?
But seeing that he was a master from afar, as the emperor, he should have a stomachache, so he suppressed his breath. Then the topic was changed and another question was changed.
"So, Master, is there any Buddha in this world?"
Unexpectedly, Bodhidharma's answer completely touched the heart of Emperor Wu of Liang, and he was instantly furious.
"No!" Damo is determined without a trace of slight strokes. We know who is Emperor Wu of Liang? He is the most believer in Buddhism among the emperors of all dynasties. He even sacrificed his life for Buddhism many times to promote the development of Buddhism at that time, and he made some efforts.
In front of him, wouldn’t it touch the bottom line in his heart? When Emperor Wu of Liang heard this, his temper naturally came up, and then said to Bodhidharma: "As a monk, do you know who you are?"
However, Bodhidharma was still calm and calm. With just one sentence, he undoubtedly poured another handful of oil on Emperor Wu of Liang's fire.
"I don't know!" Emperor Wu of Liang could not tolerate it after hearing this, so he immediately drove Bodhidharma out.
Maybe you and I will both have some doubts, and even feel that this Dharma is too arrogant, let alone the king of a country. Is this obviously a fool?
Little do you know that these three sentences can be said to have fully explained the profound Buddhist teachings of Bodhidharma.
After Emperor Wu of Liang drove away Bodhidharma, his anger disappeared. Soon after, he remembered this matter again and found another master, a volunteer master. I told the master about this and complained.
After hearing this, Master laughed: Master, you really misunderstood Bodhidharma. He answered every sentence very well. "
When Emperor Wu of Liang heard this, he felt confused: "He said I have no merits, said that Buddha does not exist, and even said that he didn't know who he was. Is this a good answer? "
" The volunteer master said just a few words, and finally made Emperor Wu of Liang suddenly realize:
" Bodhidharma said, "Your Majesty, you have no merits, because you always talk about merits and ask others to praise your merits. This becomes greed for merits, and naturally there will be no merits." "
" Bodhidharma said that Buddha does not exist because Buddha has no form, it only exists in a thought in his heart. Since the emperor asks whether the Buddha exists or not, the emperor naturally doubts the existence of the Buddha. If there is no Buddha in his heart, there will naturally be no Buddha."
" And Bodhidharma said that he didn't know who he was, which made it even more reasonable. Just think about it, who am I before my parents were born? Who were we before we were born? "
Emperor Wu of Liang felt regretful after hearing this: It seems that I have driven away a true master of enlightenment."
Bodhidharma crossed the river with a reed and became an allusion. The divine light followed thousands of miles and kept
At this time, Bodhidharma, who was driven away by the emperor, continued to travel and spread the Dharma, and passed through the Yuhuatai, Nanjing. A monk came into view, and the people around him surrounded him and regarded him as the master, named Divine Light. This divine light is extremely extraordinary and amazing. It is being preached at this time. Bodhidharma was naturally very curious. He followed the crowd and listened to him, wanting to hear what he could do.
The people around him often exclaimed: "The scriptures spoken by God can make the stubborn stone nod, and the earth produces golden lotus." The people praised the people, and they could be said to have put God's light into the sky.
Next, our Master Bodhidharma once again began to teach people, and his actions once again angered the monk.
The few scriptures explain this, which makes Bodhidharma nodded in agreement and sometimes shakes his head to express his negation. Perhaps because he was loved by thousands of people, Bodhidharma's move to shake his head naturally seemed particularly dazzling here.
Divine Light saw Bodhidharma at a glance. The unshaven monk in front of him actually denied me. He was so disrespectful to others. He immediately asked, "Who are you? Why do you shake your head?"
Divine Mo did not speak. He knew that the two had differences in their views on Buddhism, and this Divine Light was still a little arrogant and should not listen to his own words. Then he left silently, made concessions, and prepared to travel north.
Bodhidharma never expected that the slightly arrogant monk in front of him would lose his arms because of himself in the future. He would not have thought that he would become a proud disciple who inherited his own legacy and eventually became the second generation of Chinese Zen masters.
This divine light saw Bodhidharma gradually fading away, and suddenly heard someone among the crowd say, "He is an Indian monk, Bodhidharma, and he is diligent in Buddhism, but he is really a master."
When the divine light heard this, he was ashamed and immediately stood up to chase him, apologizing for this, and was willing to worship Bodhidharma as his teacher.
One person was preparing to cross the river north, and one person was chasing him desperately.
Bharma reaches the shore of Yangtze River , and the river is surging, and there is no boat crossing the river. I saw an old woman tied up reeds on the shore, and there was no choice.
"Old Bodhisattva, if you want to cross the river, but there is no boat. Can you cross a reed and help me cross the river?" The old woman glanced at Bodhidharma and saw that Bodhidharma was extraordinary and like a Buddha, she pulled a reed and gave it to Bodhidharma.
Bodhidharma stood on the reeds, holding his head and chest up, and actually crossed the river. This is the allusion of Bodhidharma crossing the river with a reed.
At this time, the divine light finally chased the riverside, and was already panting. Seeing Damo crossing the river , he felt hot and snatched the old woman next to him a bundle of reeds and prepared to cross the river. Unexpectedly, the divine light sank directly into the bottom of the water as soon as it stepped on it. It's so embarrassing.
Divine Light swallowed a mouthful of mud and almost came up. He was instantly furious: Why can he cross the river with a reed? I will sink into the water if a bundle of me is sinking into the water.
The old woman said one word again and again to make Shen Guang feel ashamed: He is the reed that transforms me, and he will naturally help you. You are robbing me, so you will naturally have no chance to save you.
Facing the wall for 9 years has become a legend, and the Chengzu Temple in Shaolin, China 10
chapters, after Bodhidharma crossed the river, he went north and practiced ascetic all the way, worshiped when he saw the mountain, and sat when he saw the temple. It was not until the 3rd year of Xiaochang in the Northern Wei Dynasty that I finally arrived at Shaolin Temple in Songshan. It is extremely pure here, with beautiful mountains and rivers. A decision arises again in Bodhidharma's mind: this is a pure Buddhist land.
He finally decided to settle down in Shaolin and promote Zen here. Let's settle down. At this point, the Shaolin Mountains of Songshan finally became the ancestral home of Chinese Zen Buddhism.
Dharma walked around and explored this mountain forest and accidentally discovered a natural stone cave, which was only 3 meters high, and the cave was warm in winter and cool in summer. It can be said to be a good place for meditation and meditation.
Bodhidharma then entered into meditation and meditated, sat cross-legged, clasped his hands together, faced the rock wall in the cave, and realized his own nature. The meditation in this cave faced the wall, lasting for a full nine years from 527 AD to 536 AD. When he left the pass nine years later, the image of Bodhidharma meditating on the rock wall in the cave was left, like a shadow, vaguely visible. Therefore, later generations called it the Bodhidharma face wall shadow stone, and this cave is called the Bodhidharma face wall cave, which has been worshipped for generations and has been preserved to this day.
The divine light broke the arm and stood on the snow, touching Bodhidharma, and finally became the second-generation first ancestor
At this time, the divine light could not cross the river, and regretted it, so he had to go home. But the belief in my heart has taken root, and Master Bodhidharma has been considered a meditation. Immediately, I tried all my strength just to find a way to cross the river. Fortunately, hard work pays off. After all the hardships, the divine light finally followed Bodhidharma to Shaolin Temple .
After finding Bodhidharma, he even expressed his intention and wanted to devote himself to Bodhidharma. At this time, Bodhidharma recalled the words and deeds of Shen Guang in Yuhuatai , and knew that he must be very arrogant and insincere, so he politely rejected Shen Guang and advised him to go back.
Unexpectedly, the divine light did not leave. The subsequent series of actions were shocking and moved.
Shenguang believes that if you do not accept me, it does not mean that I cannot be by your side.
That's it, the stone cave of Bodhidharma faces the wall, and the divine light serves it with all its heart, protects its Dharma and takes care of Bodhidharma. Bodhidharma's actions deeply felt the divine light. It made him willing to follow him for the rest of his life.
. In this follower, Bodhidharma faced the wall for 9 years. He never left his side and served for 9 years.
However, even so, 9 years later, Bodhidharma was still unwilling to accept him as his disciple. Until that winter, the heavy snow finally moved Bodhidharma.
In the cold winter, Bodhidharma stood at the Bodhidharma pavilion and meditated, while the divine light stood outside the pavilion as usual to protect it. Unexpectedly, heavy snow suddenly fell from the sky, and the snow slowly covered the divine light outside the pavilion. The snow became heavier and heavier, covering the divine light. But even so, the divine light was still unmoved and his hands were folded together. This scene was like a statue standing in the snow. It was already the next morning when Bodhidharma came out of meditation and was shocked.
"What are you doing in the snow?"
Divine light remained motionless: "Seeking the Dharma from the Buddha."
But Bodhidharma once again refused: "I want me to preach the Dharma to you unless red blood falls from the sky." Unexpectedly, the divine light was actually the listener's intention, thinking that this was Bodhidharma's test and Zen for him. The sudden heavy snowfall was proof of God's determination to himself.
immediately resolutely pulled out the ring knife he carried, and with a click, blood gushed instantly. An arm that had been frozen long fell to the ground. The snow on the ground was dyed red in an instant.
Then, the divine light endured the severe pain and walked around the Damo Pavilion for a while, and continued to stand in front of Damo.
Bodhidharma was amazed at the divine light that he had cut off his arm to seek the Dharma. He also remembered the perseverance of serving for nine years, and was moved by it. It seems that all the arrogance and complacency of the Divine Light have long been removed with the broken arm.
finally agreed to pass the Dharma and took the Dharma name for the divine light Huike . He also passed on the magic weapon to Huike and eventually became the second generation of Zen masters in China. The Damoting was also renamed Lixueting .
After passing the robe and bowl to Huike, Bodhidharma left Shaolin and went to Qiansheng Temple, Longmen, Luoyang. Until the 3rd year of Eastern Wei Emperor Xiaojing passed away. I never returned to India in my life.
Time flies, and 600 years later, Zen Buddhism finally became the mainstream of Chinese Buddhist . It was later introduced to Japan in the 4th to 6th centuries, and until it entered Europe and the United States in the 20th century.
thus became one of the most influential factions in the world.
And when we recall the Bodhidharma in the ancient cave thousands of years ago, we can't help but bow. He stayed away from his hometown with a sense of tolerance and saved all living beings.
