More than 1,800 years ago, during the Eastern Han Dynasty, ancient Indian King Ashoka sent an envoy to China to bring Sakyamuni finger bone relics to Famen Town, Fufeng, Shaanxi Province. A tomb was erected based on the relics, which was then named "Ashoka Pagoda".
1 More than 300 years ago, the founding emperor of the Tang Dynasty Li Yuan ordered to build a pagoda and named it Famen Temple . During the reign of Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang Dynasty, a four-level wooden pagoda was built.
More than 400 years ago, the thirteen-story brick pagoda of Famen Temple was completed during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty.
In 1981, the southwest half of the Famen Temple tower collapsed.
In 1987, archaeologists excavated the underground palace of Famen Temple, and unearthed four Buddha finger relics and 2,499 Tang Dynasty treasures.
In 1988, the renovated Famen Temple and Famen Temple Museum were opened to the public.
In 2006, as an ancient site from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the Qing Dynasty, the Famen Temple site was approved by the State Council to be included in the sixth batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
In 2009, the Hemaste Relic Pagoda was completed and the Famen Cultural Scenic Spot was officially opened to the outside world.
In 2014, the 27th World Buddhist Fellowship was held at Famen Temple.
