Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced that the UK originally planned to spread gigabit broadband to every household in the country by 2025, but it has now reduced the scale so that 85% of households can use the technology. Although those in towns and cities across the UK may not be affected by the plan, those in rural areas will be affected by poor internet connections.

According to BBC reports, without government help, it is estimated that by the end of 2025, the commercial deployment of gigabit fiber will cover more than 70% of places. According to the original plan, the government will help complete the last 30% of the connections, but it has now been reduced to 15%.

Previously, the British government had doubted whether the 100% goal could be achieved, because about 1% of remote households had very expensive connections. Many people living outside towns usually have speeds below 30Mbps. In the next decade, they may start to see the limitations of the network as they try to connect more IoT devices, such as smart home gadgets.

However, the British government did not reduce the budget for this work, keeping it at 5 billion pounds. But what has changed is that its expenditure next year will be much lower. By 2024, only 1.2 billion pounds of the 5 billion pounds will be available, and the remaining funds will be used as the deadline approaches.
