First of all, the height of this bald mountain tree is a 76.8-meter-high Bhutan Song in Green Village, Beibeng Township, Motuo County, Tibet. It was announced on May 8 this year, and the discoverer named it "Sindabu (meaning sacred tree)".

However, this 76.8-meter-high Bhutanese pine has gained the title of "the tallest tree" in my country. The height of an 83.2-meter-high Yunnan Huangguo Fir in Chayu County, Tibet is much higher than that. This tree was discovered by Guo Qinghua's team during an outdoor inspection in Chayu County, Tibet. Note that although this tree is called Yunnan Huangguo Fir, this tree is not in Yunnan.
Later on July 10, the height of the tree was revised to 82.6 meters. Guo Qinghua's team used lidar technology to accurately measure it and determined that its height was 82.6 meters. At the same time, it was estimated that its age was about 400 years old through tree ringing method.
Unexpectedly, on October 9, the height of this tree was re-identified. It turned out that the scientific expedition team used an artificial tree climbing ruler to measure the trees this time, and finally came up with the data that the height of this Yunnan Huangguo fir tree is 83.4 meters. This height is basically equivalent to 28 stories high. Check the building you live in. Is it not as high as this tree?

This time the measurement must be more accurate than the previous two measurements? In fact, it cannot be said that it is particularly accurate, but it is definitely more authoritative, because it is adopted as the "gold standard" for measuring giant trees - the direct measurement method of climbing trees, which is to manually climb to the top of the giant tree and use a metal tape measure to lower the highest treetop to the average ground where the tree roots are located. This method can also be said to directly measure the height of the tree with a ruler. Everyone agrees with this measurement method.
During this inspection, the scientific expedition team also obtained the relatively accurate age of the tree, roughly 380 years old. At the same time, more than 50 plants were found climbing or parasitic on the tree.
Why did this tree experience three changes in height in 5 months? There are three reasons. One is the different measurement methods. The first measurement should be the use of drone altitude and altitude estimation, and it is also possible that the UAV steering ruler was used; the second measurement was the lidar and other height measurement; the third measurement was the use of manual tree climbing ruler. Judging from the data of the specific heights of 83.2, 82.6, and 83.4 meters in the three measurements, the difference is not very big, only 0.8 meters.
But the difference is 0.8 meters in different measurement methods. This number is still a bit large. So another reason besides the measurement method is that trees will grow, and the height is different every day. For example, bamboo , when bamboo shoots just turn into bamboo, the height of each day can reach up to 1 to 2 meters. Some trees can grow dozens of centimeters in the rapid growth stage. For example, trees like this are already very tall, the growth rate is relatively slow, but they are still growing. The data from the two measurements on May 15 and August 10 this year showed that in two months and 20 days, the tree grew 10 centimeters taller.
Another reason is that the roots of the trunk of a big tree are not easy to determine? If it is determined at different locations, the height will also vary. It is normal to have a difference of tens of centimeters. In addition, there is also the effect of on the ground settlement of , which will also have a little difference.
Why can this Yunnan Huangguo fir located in Chayu County, Tibet grow to a height of 83.4 meters? To answer this question, you must consider many aspects. First of all, this tree has the potential to grow to this height. If it is a shrub or other tree species such as locust trees, elm trees, jujube trees, , etc., it cannot grow so tall. fir tree is the most common tall tree species in the world, and some can even grow to more than 100 meters high. Then there is a place where trees grow, where there must be environmental conditions for trees to grow very high. Trees on the plains cannot grow to seventy or eighty meters high, because strong winds and lightning will "snipe" the growth of tall trees. Only those growing in valleys, because there are blockages from tall mountains around them and strong winds cannot blow in, and lightning can only hit the mountains or trees on the top of the mountain, so that the trees in the valley can grow very tall.
Eastern Tibet, western Sichuan and Yunnan belong to Hengduan Mountain Area . The mountains are crisscrossed, the tops and valleys are undulating at a height. The trees growing between the valleys can grow very tall. The taller trees in my country are basically found in this area, and there are probably higher trees in this area, but because they are too remote, it is difficult for humans to reach them, so it is not easy to find them.
