Australia COVID-19 Trial (ASCOT) In a study published in the New England Journal of Medical Evidence and published at the American Society of Hematology Conference today, the most effective blood dilution treatment level required for hospitalized patients with COVID-19 was determined.

COVID-19 The global pandemic remains a major public health challenge. ASCOT researchers aim to find out which treatments are most effective in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

Hosted COVID-19 patients are at an increased risk of developing a thrombosis (or thrombosis), which in turn may lead to the development of organ failure. Almost all of these patients receive some level of blood-diluting medication.

In an international study, the ASCOT team conducted a randomized clinical trial that tested more than 1,500 patients in Australia, New Zealand, India and Nepal to varying degrees of anticoagulation (or blood dilution) tests.

They found that moderate anticoagulation therapy has an 86% chance of being better than low-dose anticoagulation therapy. Higher therapeutic doses showed no benefit. Professor Steven Tong, principal investigator of

ASCOT, a clinician infectious diseases at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and co-head of clinical research at the Doherty Institute, said the findings would inform the WHO sponsored guide.

"The current practice in Australia is low-dose anticoagulation, while international guidelines recommend high therapeutic doses of anticoagulation. Therefore, our findings provide evidence that the intermediate position may be the most beneficial," said Professor Tong. "We are delighted that our research was selected to be presented at the American Hematology Association Annual Meeting and Expo, the premier international conference in the field of hematology," said Zoe McQuilten, associate director of the Department of Transfusion Research at Monash University and consultant for the health of Monash University.
