Yan Ning announced that he will resign from Princeton University and return to China to establish the Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences. Yan Ning is 45 years old. He graduated from the Department of Biological Sciences and Technology of Tsinghua University in 2000. He then went to the Department of Molecular Biology of Princeton University in the United States, where he studied under Shi Yigong and obtained a doctorate degree. He later stayed in the department to engage in postdoctoral research. In October 2007, Yan Ning, who was under 30, returned to his alma mater, Tsinghua University , established a laboratory, and became the youngest professor and doctoral supervisor at the time of Tsinghua University School of Medicine. For six years, he has been committed to overcoming the structural and functional research of the membrane protein , one of the most challenging areas in structural biology, and has achieved a series of results.
In 2014, the team she led analyzed the three-dimensional crystal structure of human glucose transporter GLUT1 for the first time in the world. In 2015, it further obtained the ultra-high resolution structure of GLUT3 binding substrate and inhibitor with more conformations, thus clearly revealing the molecular basis of the basic cellular process of glucose transmembrane transport. In addition, she also made important contributions to the field of ion channel structure biology , parsed the crystal structure of voltage-gated sodium ion channel, and used the latest cryo-electron microscopy technology to obtain the high-resolution structure of the largest calcium ion channel RyR1.
In May 2017, Yan Ning accepted the invitation from Princeton University in the United States and was hired as a tenured professor of the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University. Since May of the same year, he has served as an adjunct professor at Tsinghua University. In 2019, Yan Ning was elected as a foreign academician of the National Academy of Sciences, and two years later he was elected as a foreign academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
