On October 31, the list of 2022 DAMO Academy Qing Orange Award was announced. 15 Chinese young scientists including Bai Rui, Chen Mingcheng, Shao Lijing, Wu Hao won the award and will receive a million prize and all-round scientific research support from Alibaba . Their average age is only 33 years old, and 60% of them come from basic disciplines. They have taken the lead in major scientific research breakthroughs. As the younger generation of scientific research "star-picking people", they dare to think and act, and they are no exception, and constantly challenge world-class scientific research problems. On November 3, at the Hangzhou Yunqi Conference, many academicians will present awards to them.
Qing Orange Award is a public welfare academic selection specially designed to discover young Chinese scholars aged 35 and under. It was initiated by Alibaba Damo Academy in 2018 and supported by Alibaba charity. This award reduces the burden on participants in application materials, and does not only have qualifications, resumes, papers, or family backgrounds. It aims to provide timely and effective help to outstanding young scientists and support them to climb the peak of science for ten years. In the past four years, the Qing Orange Award has supported nearly 40 top young scholars.
This year, the Qing Orange Award covers a wide range of science and technology fields, and the social attention has been further increased. Through independent application, recommendations from others, and active searches, the 2022 Qingcheng Award received nearly 500 valid application materials from 135 universities and institutes across the country. These young scholars participating in the evaluation have great academic potential and have been highly recommended by nearly 200 academicians, 19 university presidents, and 2 Nobel Prize winners.
University of Science and Technology of China Young physicist Chen Mingcheng, nominated by his mentor Lu Chaoyang as Bole. After strict preliminary review, communication review, on-site defense, and final review review by the organizing committee, 15 "Qingcheng Scholars" were born this year. They come from the fields of theoretical mathematics, quantum physics, , life medicine, chemical materials, software security, end-edge cloud collaborative intelligence, third-generation semiconductors, etc., and their research scales range from the vast universe to extremely micro life, covering major scientific research directions in many countries.
Because of love, these young "star-picking people" embark on a path that few people walk, and carry out romance and persistence to the end on the scientific journey. Gravitational physicist Shao Lijing, who uses the universe as the experimental field, participated in the feat in human astronomy history and took the first photo of a black hole 55 million light-years away; chemical physicist Yang Jie "made a movie" for molecules on the femtosecond scale, and he discovered the "quantum drag" between water molecules for the first time in countless high-speed shootings; Wu Jiamin, who entered the field of optics from information science, believes that "the world's magnificent and magnificent weirdness is often in the danger and far away."
At the same time, they are also a new generation of scientists shining with confidence, with the spirit of "first is first" and "dare to play straight balls". Bai Rui, a female scientist born in the 1990s trained locally, was called "one of the best students" by her supervisor, Academician Shi Yigong, and she firmly believes that "it is because splicing sequosome research is a world problem that we have to do it. If we don't dare, we will lose the first step."
More female scientists showed their strengths in the Qing Orange Awards. Wu Hao from Tsinghua University , "never thinks girls are not suitable for learning mathematics." She studied under two Fields Medal winners, and solved a problem in 7 years to finally prove the conjecture in the field of statistical physics; another Tsinghua scholar Tong Dan became the first female scientist to participate in the award during pregnancy; Zhejiang University female scientist Poplar , who is also the deputy chairman of the Female Scientist Committee of the Chinese Power Society. She hopes that "all female scientists can bravely pursue their dreams."
