Now the research and application of stem cell in the international and domestic countries is changing with each passing day. Many doctors also use it to improve some chronic diseases, such as type 1 diabetes, etc., but they must continue to study its mechanism of action. In recent times, some plastic surgeons have also been using stem cells to treat aging and sunburn 's skin. But while they have achieved good results, it is unclear how these treatments (using adult stem cells obtained from patients) rejuvenate the "photo-aging" facial skin, and now the mechanism of action has finally been discovered. Steam cells improve skin by modifying the elastin network
A new microscopic study provides the answer: Within a few weeks, stem cell treatment eliminated the sun-damaged elastin network and replaced the elastin network with normal, undamaged tissues and structures, even deeper in the skin.
Mesenchymal stem cells can significantly improve the skin
According to the report of Dr. Luis Charles-de-Sá of Universidade, the injection of patients' own mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is "appropriate, capable and sufficient to trigger the complete structural regeneration of sun-aging skin." Their research was published in the June issue of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS).
Research methods
Researchers evaluated the effect of MSC (mesenchymal stem cell) treatment on the cellular and molecular levels of facial skin that are damaged by sunlight (photoaging). All 20 patients with an average age of 56 in the study were scheduled for cosmetic surgery, living in the northeast of Brazil , an area expected to be strongly exposed to the sun.
For each patient, a small number of adipocytes in the abdomen are processed to create patient-specific MSCs (mesenchymal stem cells) and cultured stem cells are injected under the facial skin in front of the ear. When the patient underwent cosmetic surgery three to four months later, skin samples from the stem cell-treated areas were compared with the untreated areas.
Study found: It can significantly improve skin health
Histology and structural analysis under a microscope showed that MSC treatment can improve the overall skin structure. The treated area shows a “partial or broad reversal” of the damage associated with sunlight, improving the elastic web of the skin. In a layer directly below the skin surface, stem cell-treated areas show new, fully organized network of fiber bundles and regeneration of dermal ECM remodeling changes.
In the deeper skin layer, the "tangle, degradation and dysfunction" deposits of elastin damaged by sunlight are replaced by normal elastin fiber networks. These changes are accompanied by molecular markers of the absorption of abnormal elastin and neoelastin development processes.
Research results: Stem cells trigger many cellular and molecular-level pathways involved in skin repair and regeneration
There are research results that stem cells trigger many cellular and molecular-level pathways involved in skin repair and regeneration. Dr. Charles-de-Sá and colleagues wrote that using patients’ own fat-derived MSCs “may be a relevant suggestion for anti-aging effects in photo-damaged human skin regeneration.”
Stem cells can improve skin aging
Editor-in-chief of Plastic Surgery and Plastic Surgery Rod J. Rohrich, MD’s video commented: “Researchers concluded that stem cells can improve skin aging.” In his video, Dr. Rohrich guides viewers into the enormous changes in the microscopic appearance of skin samples obtained before and after MSC treatment.
"Structural reconstruction under the surface can truly improve the strength and appearance of the facial dermis."

Therefore, the development of stem cells is full of hope, and in the future, it can bring new opportunities for the treatment of type 1 diabetes and even the reversal of type 12 diabetes , we will wait and see. #Health knowledge popular science#
