New research: fungi in tumors may help cancer diagnosis and treatment
Israel Weizmann Institute of Science recently announced that researchers found that the various types of fungi contained in tumors may help cancer detection, diagnosis and even treatment.
This study, published in the biweekly journal of " cell " was completed by a team led by researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and the University of California, San Diego.
According to Weizmann Institute of Science , the team systematically analyzed the fungal community in more than 17,000 tissue and blood samples collected from patients with 35 cancers. researchers detected fungi in all these samples, mostly hidden in immune cells in cancer cells or tumors. The
statement said that the study revealed multiple links between specific fungi in tumors and related therapeutic conditions. For example, if breast cancer patients with have Malassezia spherical—a fungus that naturally occur on the skin—the survival rate is much lower than that of breast cancer patients without the tumor. Furthermore, specific fungi are more common in breast tumors in older patients than in younger patients, and in pulmonary tumors in smokers than in nonsmokers.
study also analyzed the characteristics of fungi and bacteria in tumors. For example, tumors containing Aspergillus fungi usually contain specific bacteria, and tumors containing Malassezia often contain other bacteria. Research in these aspects may help early detection and treatment of cancer.
Professor Yizak Pierpeer, chief researcher of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute of Science, who participated in the study, said that this study provides new clues to understanding the complex biological environment in tumors. Future research will reveal how fungi affect cancer development. "Fungi are not only present in cancer cells, but also in immune cells, which means in the future we may find that fungi have an impact not only on cancer cells, but also on immune cells and their activity."
