[CNMO News] With the rapid development of the e-sports industry in recent years, society's concept of games is slowly changing. While there is no doubt that excessive gaming is harmful to the body, in recent years, researchers have discovered that video games also have the ability to produce some cognitive benefits. Some studies suggest that moderate gaming may improve people's decision-making abilities.

A new study by researchers at Georgia State University used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore the effects of playing video games on brain activity during a decision-making task. "Because playing video games often requires rapid utilization of incoming sensory information and precise iterative decisions, decision-making tasks are relevant for exploring the effects of video games," the researchers noted.

The study recruited 50 young subjects, Twenty-eight of them were classified as regular video game players (playing more than 5 hours per week) and 19 were non-gamers (playing less than 1 hour per week). In the MRI machine , participants completed a movement classification task to measure their decision-making abilities. The task, which involves watching two sets of differently colored dots move in opposite directions and requiring test takers to provide relevant answers within a short period of time, is designed to help assess how quickly the brain can process sensory information and make reaction decisions.

Video Games

Research has found that video gamers have more accurate answers and faster reactions than non-gamers. But even more interestingly, the brain imaging data showed that gamers also had different brain responses to the tasks. This study suggests that video game players have better performance on decision-making tasks and that playing video games may enhance several subprocesses of sensory, perceptual, and action mapping to improve decision-making skills.

Previously, there have been experiments conducted on whether action games can improve people's reaction ability. Research shows that people who have been trained in action games respond 25% faster in decision-making tests than people who play strategy games, and the responses of gamers who have been trained in action are also more accurate.

A series of experiments have shown that video games do improve cognitive skills and decision-making. Although being addicted to games is not advisable, NIO should research and develop video games that can be controlled by teachers to improve students' cognitive learning.
