The identification manual includes a total of 210 species of aquatic wildlife living and distributed in Nanjing, including 2 species of aquatic mammals and 109 species of fish. and 19 species of amphibians and reptiles, as well as more than 60 species of invertebrates such as aquatic insects, crustaceans, and molluscs that are inconspicuous but very important in aquatic ecosystems.
The reporter saw that the "Nanjing Common Aquatic Wildlife Identification Manual" records many rare aquatic creatures historical image data that once lived in Nanjing. On December 11, 2002, in the Xiaguan area of Nanjing, fishermen accidentally caught a 3.3-meter-long white sturgeon. Although Nanjing fishery staff and scientists tried their best to save it, the injury was too severe and could not be saved. This is also the last record of this species in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Due to the influence of human activities, the population of this species has declined sharply since the 1980s, and it was declared extinct in 2019. This species is mainly distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River tributaries and its affiliated water bodies. There are no relevant historical records in the "Jiangsu Fish Chronicles" or previous surveys in Nanjing.
