After the storage is completed, as long as the user knows the storage location of the dye, the binary information can be decoded with special equipment. The researchers said that in the dye storage system, the accuracy of reading information is as high as 99.6%; on the epoxy surface of 7.2 mm × 7.2 mm, they can record 1,405,542 bytes of digital information with dye.

Previously, the Whitesides team had tried to use peptides as storage for digital information, but the speed of reading and writing hindered its further development. In contrast, the dye storage system has excellent read and write speeds, and the average rates of writing and reading information are 128 bits/sec and 469 bits/sec, respectively. This created the record for the fastest reading speed of all molecular information storage methods.

Researchers believe that data storage methods similar to dye storage systems will become more and more important in the 21st century.
