Subgroup analysis showed that in people aged ≥65 years, elevated sulfur dioxide exposure concentrations increased the risk of heart failure hospitalization on the day of exposure and 1 day after exposure, but there was no significant association between the two in people aged 18 to 64 years.

In addition, elevated sulfur dioxide concentration was associated with the risk of hospitalization for heart failure on the day of exposure and one day after exposure among residents in the southern region, but there was no significant association between the two in the northern region .

In the warm season (April to October), elevated sulfur dioxide concentration has a significant impact on the risk of heart failure hospitalization on the day of exposure, but has no such effect in the cold season (November to March of the following year).

The author pointed out that the mechanism of the impact of elevated sulfur dioxide concentration on heart failure is still unclear. It may be that sulfur dioxide causes an increase in cardiac load and oxygen consumption , causing the body to produce inflammatory responses and oxidative stress responses, leading to vascular endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis and cardiac remodeling.

Subgroup analysis of different ages found that people aged ≥65 years are more sensitive to changes in sulfur dioxide concentration, suggesting that the elderly are the group that needs to be focused on.
